Decent King blank?

I have been looking around at blanks to build a new King rod from. I have seen these a time or two and they kind of look interesting. The 81020 seems like a reasonable spec rating. I know that MANY of you have a lot of experience designing and building rods. What do you think of this blank?

I see that the price is a bit more than some but I think it is still in a reasonable range... or no?

I may just go for a Gatorglass blank for prices sake... that way I can feel better about my funds.

what's wrong with that roddy rod you had? that's about as good a king rod as you can get...tried and true, proven thru the years, and beautiful glass as well...most of the new blanks are either light black or dark black

Yeah, there is nothing at all wrong with it. I love that rod, but I am wanting to build some more. I am looking for a blank that isn't so heavy towards the tip. I fished the Roddy blank all summer and will even more, but the weight is rough for all day fishing. Something light weight but still powerful enough for kings would be cool. I am also thinking of some stainless spring guides, though I would expect them to be heavy too.... it is all about compromises I guess. The main thing is to practice building. I get obsessive about an idea until I go and do it. I spend all day day dreaming over the act of building something. Pouring over every detail in my mind, working out the bugs. I bet a lot of rod builders are like that. I would not go around calling myself a builder, but I do have a mind set that causes me to constantly be making something. It is a curse on the pocket at times.

Go on ebay and search for fenwick blanks. There is a guy on there that has a ton of new old Fenwick blanks. Obie bought a 965 and I got a 967. mine is light but I have not finished the rod. Once you find him send him a message on the type of blank your looking for....he might be able to hook you up.

Thanks Rick. Really I am leaning towards finding a rod on the pier that I really like and ordering the kind of blank that it was made from. The trouble is the hands on thing for me. I think I need to hold it.

I love the look of Fenwick rods but I have never had a chance to handle one really. Same with the ones that I am asking about here.

What are the favorites?

I've build a couple of Lamiglass LSBM1083M EGlass blanks and they finish with foam split grips at just under 12 ounces. They are strong and light and make a great king rod. If you want an eight foot rod just as good go for the LSBM963M. I watched Paul Hill throw stud remoras one after another over the rail the other day with his LSBM1083M, it's a strong rod and has a nice tip.

Wow! That looks like it should be very close to what I have in mind. And the price is MUCH better than what I had in mind. Thanks Obie I will certainly keep that recommendation close to mind.

I realized that part of my trouble may in fact NOT be the weight, but rather the balance. I build the rod that Ferd mentioned with a minimal handle section of wrapped twine, and that may not have been heavy enough to make the rod tip balance in the hand so that the forearm has tow work to keep the tip up. In my mind that is where the trouble is.

It isn't a knock off. It is a Mudhole branded Lamiglas. The only difference I can tell from the catalog, besides the obvious (price and name), is a one year warranty verses a lifetime warranty. The Mudhole version may be a cosmetic second but that is merely speculation on my part.

I am no snob. It is a practical thing for me. I have more reels than rods... I am slowly getting more and more family to the pier. I need more rods! LOL Nice problem to have.

im in the same boat blam more reels than rods and i feel you on the obssesive thing when it comes to building stuff . im learning how to build rods also and also need some help . I want to build a ling rod this winter and dont have a clue what type blank to start with. hoping obie or anybody who builds rods can help me out with some info . what would be the ultimate blank ,guides, seat , tip etc. for a ling rod? what i would like is for someone with rod building experience to put together a list of parts to build what they consider a perfect ling rod . just bought a half hitch custom 8ft its pretty nice caught several nice kings on it so far and i like the rod but there are some things i dont like about it reel seat for example anyway any info would be much appreciated.

To tell the truth our E Glass ling blank selection is getting slim. for anything over 8 ft. There are several 8 ft eglass blanks which could be used, for instance Gator U696H, Forecast makes an 8 ft blank, CUI makes a 8 and 9 ft blank, either will work for ling fishing. Seeker PS85 or PS90, Half Hitch in Destin had a few of the Seekers a few months back, they were white glass.

If you would prefer graphite, most makers offer 8-9 ft graphite blank rated 15-30lb test and 1-3 ounces. Some of the blanks are Lamiglass, PacBay, American Tackle, Rain Shadow (Batson).

What is it that you don't like about the reel seat on your Half Hitch rod?

well the plastic under the metal bands where the reel feet insert has deformed some how and it wasnt letting the reel seat properly so i took an exacto knife and removed alittle of the plastic inside and the reel fits much better but still not as solid as i like. its a fuji seat i thought they make quality stuff idk i prob got the only screwed up one with my luck. well the lighter the better for me so graphite i suppose but honestly i dont know the rods i had when i was a kid were fenwick customs that my dad made and all i knew was that they were fenwick he kept me supplied with gear and all i had to do is fish hell i was only 8yrs old then we moved when i was 12 so its all pretty much new to me as far as rods go. which blank would you pick for yourself if you could have any one you wanted? and thanks for your help already and in advance. i would like to get everything i need to put one together because im goin to a friends house in bama soon that builds rods and hes gonna walk me through the process but he said im on my own gettin everything . sorry for the lengthy replys

yeah i was already lookin at those blanks after seing that 9ftr you built and sold not to long ago and by the way nice rod you did an excellent job on it. I noticed the single foot guides start at 30 but what about the two bigger guides ? theyre diff is that because they dont offer those bigger sizes in single foot or is it a strength issue or what? i like the single foot guides and may use some but i would like all the guides to match. also think i wanta use a metal seat what are your thoughts on metal verses the other options? Obie thanks for taking the time to answer these googan questions lol im workin on becoming less of a googan everyday

Yes the first two guides are different because the single foot guides don't go any bigger than a size 30. The next two were 70, 50, you could easily go 60, 40 as well. I wanted to put a bunch of guides across the blank to distribute the load more evenly. The single foot guides weigh significantly less than the double braced guides.

I haven't built anything with a metal reel seat in years so I may not have the best answer for your question. I typically use graphite reelseats to save on weight and they are readily available. Either reelseat will last for years with the proper care.

yeah thats the first reel seat ive had a problem with idk maybe they will swap it out when i come back. i like the seat on that seeker ps90 that was sold a while back.

sweet let us know what you think when you get it finished i was thinkin about gettin the same blank. i havent actually started yet just learning how got some stuff ordered thread , rod wrapper and dryer. china marker etc.. but i was wondering what kinda epoxy and thread finish i need. on line i have seen so many diff kinds and amounts can you guys get me in the right direction ? what brands? high build or thin ? how much ?, i dont wanna have to order more all the time but its fairly expensive for larger amounts

kingv1000 obie has some 8ft blanks that are 20$ a piece that will do everything you need as a king rod
if you can get up with him and check them out

yeah that would be perfect for my first attempt i was planning on starting out with a inexpensive blank cause im learning as i go and will build my personal stuff after im comfortable with the whole process. any suggestions on the epoxy stuff?
