Rod varnish

I have a bunch of old Berkley, Roddy, and St. Croix rods that I have decided to re-wrap and put into service again. When I scrape all the old paint/finish that is on the rod, what is a good finish to put on the rod. (I am not talking about varnish for the wrapping thread, only the rod)?

one option is to mix up some low build flex coat and add some acetone to it. just makes for an even thinner coat. instead of painting it on the rod blank, you can put the 3part mixture in your hand and run it down the rod and it seems to keep it from getting lumpy and thick in places.
a good time to do this is when you have the base wrap (thread) down and just coat the whole rod alolng with those base wraps all at once. then when it's dry, slap some guides on and finish it just like normal.

I used Outdoor Spar varnish in a spray can with several LIGHT coats on a Roddy blank, and fished it all summer with out a scratch.
