|
|
My options were limited with the pier closed as well as the road around Ft Gaines to the jetties, so I went by my sis & bnl dock to fish.
I had picked up two dozen nice live shrimp from Souther-N-Bama and got to the island about 9:30.
It was mostly sunny and mild (air and water temps were both in the low 60s) a slow falling tide and the water visibility was about 5 feet 8)
Don't ya hate it when you're on your way fishing and it suddenly dawns that you forgot a vital piece of equipment
like a landing net
Sure enough on my first shrimp I hooked a nice 4# sheepshead.
After a good fight I led it to the seawall to try and reach down to lift it with one hand. Those things do NOT have a handle :fish:
And as luck (bad) would have it the fish made a lunge and the line wrapped around the rodtip and 'tink' it broke the 4# mono :cussing:
So I spent the next 15 minutes rooting around the house and finally found one of those $8 white mesh nets on a 6 foot wooden handle.
But it worked just fine
The next few hours provided some good intermittent action with the sheepshead. Most on my 4# UL
It was neat watching them chase the shrimp to the suface and try to eat it 8)
The difficult part is to wait until the right time to set the hook
I lost several to premature releases (including two slot-sized redfish) and had one other sheepshead break off on a sizzling 30 yard run over an oyster bar
But when it was done by 1 pm I had 6 in the box (plus one more caught at the Ft Gaines jetty).
Three of those were over 4#, caught on 4#
Thank You Lord for a beautiful winter day and some nice fish to spice it up even more

I bet so. Starving to death. I'd fish for sheeps every day if I knew it was gonna be like that. |

Wow. Those are some really nice sheeps! And on 4 lb test. You must have been bowed up for a very long time with those rascals. _________________ Jim Mills

Thanks guys, I was VERY lucky #1 to be able to fish such a secluded spot on a nice day and #2 found some cooperative fish on an otherwise 'blah' day
The trick I learned when going light is when he goes around the piling; and sooner or later most WILL GO AROUND A PILING :cussing:
you have to fight the impulse to pull back hard
That's right, ease off! Just maintain a tight line.
And when the fish quits running away the steady light pressure will turn his head and you can 'lead' him back out like a dog on a leash (provided there is not much current).
And patience!
Over 4# sheepies are a different critter all together
On an UL it usually takes me more than a minute per pound to land a big one 8)
But it can be done!
My biggest to date on 4# was 7# 4 oz (at AL Pt jetty)
on 6# was 10.1# (rig south of DI)
and on 8# was 11.3# (DI Pier).
Of course I've had my 'butt handed to me' on more than a few occasions too :cussing:
But that just goes with the territory |

This has been an excellent report and postings, Dave.
Doesn't it get your goat to have your butt handed to you.
I have finally learned that it doesn't do any good to look the other way and pretend you don't see your butt being held out to you. No matter how embarrassing it may be, one must acknowledge the fact that their butt is being handed to them and then reach out to take the darn thing. The only alternative is to spend the rest of one's life walking around buttless. _________________ Jim Mills

thats good to know about letting the pressure off with the light stuff. i know it works with higher abrasian lines like powerpro when im fishing docks for snook, but ive never though 4# and 6# was hearty enough to do that...im gonna have to give it a try. thanks for the info!
