Mission accomplished - sailfish from my kayak!
I've been dying to get out in my kayak the the last few days but conditions have been terrible. I got into a school of blackfin about 5 days ago and since then all I can think about is them and sailfish. So today after dropping my daughter off at school I headed out in the yak. After getting stung by a bee about an hour after being out there and not seeing much activity I was starting to have doubts that this was going to be a good day. Caught a few small hardtails and pulled them around I finally found a spot that looked like it had potential just a big smooth circle of water so I dropped my sabiki down and caught 2 big beautiful lys. Got one out and continued to catch some nice cigs, put a big cig on my other line, well not more then 5 min into it my drag starts screaming & I see a streak of blue shoot through the water - to dark to be a King... sure enough it was my sail. He ate the ly. He made several runs with lots of jumps, it was surreal being in a yak and experiencing this. I wasn't really that far from shore so I called Ernie & had him meet me at the end of our street to take a quick pic. He was released, tired but swam away strong.

Congrats on the sailfish from the yak. I have done it from a boat before but it must be some kind of difficult to land one in a yak. _________________ "Anyone can catch a king but not everyone can gaff one" (Charlie V.)
Amazing! Whats even cooler about it is that you set out to do this, that was your goal. Way to go Linda! _________________ Calvin Martin

Congrats on the Sail, It's great to see all the small Sails around as the population must be doing well... I don't recall this many Sails being caught around here in many years... _________________ BAN ALL COMMERCIAL FISHING IN THE GULF OF MEXICO & RETURN THE RESOURCE TO THE PEOPLE WHO DESERVE IT & RESPECT IT!!!
Just a question of WHEN it was going to happen IMO. Nice job Linda! _________________ Rob

Linda, I remember reading this morning where you planned on catching a sail from the yak. I had a feeling you would do it. Congrats. _________________ This message was brought to you by the Partnership for a Googan-Free America.www.pierandsurf.com http://forums.sportfishingmag.com

I would love it if my wife was 1/10th as interested in fishing as Linda. I couldn't imagine my wife catching a bream with a cane pole, much less going out in a kayak, catching her bait, and landing a sailfish.
Ernie is one lucky man. _________________ This message was brought to you by the Partnership for a Googan-Free America.www.pierandsurf.com http://forums.sportfishingmag.com

Great job.
Now a question for the guys on this board.

Does anyone else have a wife that could do this??
Kool.
I'm sure Ernie can tell you, it's really not all that it's cracked up to be, who do you think was at home watching the baby while I went fishing...lol Seriously Ernie is great about letting me go & we take turns, we just don't get to fish together much. I can thank my dad for taking me fishing as a little girl, which is where my obsession first began. _________________ http://www.cavittscustoms.com
So when can I take Ernie's yak out? _________________ This message was brought to you by the Partnership for a Googan-Free America.www.pierandsurf.com http://forums.sportfishingmag.com

No wife here but girlfriend would do it _________________
Linda, what you accomplished took a lot of skill and I am envious. All my years of fishing I have not come close to having the thrill of catching a sail from a yak, a few from my boat and I thought that good but you have humbled me. Great job and I will post the pics for the yak striper fishermen up here on lanier to see.
Congrats!! Nice fish. I hope to be living down there in the next year or two. Have always wanted to try the kayak. Are there any clubs for "yakers" or someplace to get help for a beginer. Have pier fished for many years.
Linda, you be totally awesome! Please consider getting a two-seat kayak and becoming a pro guide. I see a tv series in your future: "Yakkin' with Linda". I used to work with James "Big Cat" Patterson, and now he's a big catfishing guide, and Bill Dance's buddy. If he can, so can you.
Please consider attaching a PFD to yourself when yakkin'. We don't want to lose you. _________________ -Jim

you guys are funny, but I actually would like to guide someday. I got my Capt's license awhile back with that in mind, but I wouldn't need it in a yak. Also pdfs are required by the uscg. An inflateable must be worn but a vest must just be within reach, mine is used as a backrest, so it's nearby. Believe me, after flipping my yak with a huge cuda on you better believe I'm more cautious! _________________ http://www.cavittscustoms.com
Awesome, glad you finally got one. This year has been crazy. _________________

One more thing. What a legacy! I can"t say that my mother caught a sailfish out of a kayak when she was expecting me, but I can say she was fishing in a boat with my dad in St. Andrews Bay and trying to keep crabs that dad threw in the bottom of the boat from pinching her toes. I think that had a lot to do with my passion for fishing and Florida. Maybe there is hope for the next generation. God Bless!! _________________ "Keep a line in the water."
lol... I hope this baby will someday be fishing telling someone, ya my mom was 4 moths pregnant with me when she caught a sail out of a yak... _________________ http://www.cavittscustoms.com
