I'd sure like to see someone put togeather a topic on how to build up the ultimate king leader.

What, no one ties up king leaders?!?!?
I usually just tie an overhand knot then twist the tag end around the leader, it holds tight but it doesn't take long to get fouled around the hook. I think Navarre Bob was saying something about snelling sevenstrand onto trebles, I'd like to see that method. _________________ Go fishing you can't catch them while sitting on the Couch!!! |

i dont have a camera, but when i tie a leader, i simply use a figure 8 knot at both the swivel and the trebel hook. pull it tight with pliers or somethin, and cut the tag ends around 1/4 inch. its quick and easy, and i haven had one pull on me yet _________________ i did it all for the snookie |

Obie, that's how I do it too. I've heard of people running the sevenstrand through the loop of the hook a second time before tying the overhand knot. I usually wrap it up the leader about 1/4" or so before clipping it tight against the leader. I put a black swivel on the top side the same way and make them around 14" long. Anywhere from a #4 to a #1 4x strong treble depending on how big a bait I'm using. _________________ Rob

Things you need:
1. Sevenstrand uncoated wire preferably in 27 or 60 pound. 40 pound is frowned upon in this area for various reasons. Do not use coated wire under any circumstances!
http://www.7strand.com/prod.php?k=50502&sk=0&p=PUR135SA
2. Eagle Claw or VMC treble hooks in sizes 6, 4, 2, 1, or 1/0. The smaller the number, the bigger the hook. The size of the baits will dictate what hook size you choose. Generally speaking, a size 4 is good for cigar minnows of all sizes and small hardtails. Size 1 would be for bigger hardtails and big menhaden. Size 6 would be for Spanish fishing with LY's or finger mullett.
http://www.shootnhunt.com/catalog...bn_2x_treble_hooks/0702-0276.html
3. 30 - 50 pound rated swivels in black color as small as size as you can find. Doesn't matter what brand. Tsunami and Bill Fisher are 2 brands that I have used.
4. A good pair of wire cutters. I only use the best and that is Klein brand electricians pliers. Average price is around 30 dollars. They have absolutely nothing to do with fishing but as an ex electrician myself, I know there is nothing in the fishing industry that will match up to these. I'm sure that Gene Sullivan would vouche for this.
http://crawfordtools.com/klein_journeyman.html
Make the leader:
1. Cut a piece of Sevenstrand about 18 inches long.
2. With the wire in one hand and the treble hook in the other - run one piece of the wire through the eye of the treble hook on the flat shank side. Only run it out to the bends in the hook.
3. Hold one piece of the wire in place and with the other hand start making ten wraps around the shank of the hook making sure the wraps are not on top of each other.
4. After your wraps are done take the other end of the wire and come back through the eye of the hook, and pull it tight.
5. On the free end of the wire tie an overhand granny knot to your swivel. Cut the tag end off as close as possible.
6. Wrap the leader around 2 fingers, pull it off, secure the ends, and store it away.

Calvin,
Great job describing the Navarre Twist, but all us "Grumpy Old Men"
use a figure eight knot to tie on a swivel! Easy to tie one: Just put the wire through the swivel eye, wrap over once, then wrap over again, and put the through loop by the swivel eye and clich it down. |

Sevenstrand flexes, single strang kinks..... Only significant differance is the play that sevenstrand has. Single is just quicker to tie if you don't have a leader straightener on you and only have access to pliers or something similar. _________________ To hell with swimming, sink. Team Granite. |

I start out with an owner size 1 or 1/O hook a swivel and about 3ft of 60# sevenstrand
I put the wire through the eye of the hook and tie an over hand knot
pull the knot tight and start wrapping the wire with 90 degree wraps
make about 6 wraps
trim off tag end of wire
take the swivel and do the same thing as the hook
pull tight and start the wraps
trim tag end
roll up and store away |

| ive caught plenty of fish on single strand, but it seems to kink easier therefore you need to replace it more often. i have caught many fish on the same seven strand leader when they are thick and im too lazy to switch. its not the best idea, but i sure wouldnt feel good about doing it with single strand. |

I used 40# for many years it always worked outstanding. Then last year in late ling season i lost three big kings in three casts due to bite throughs. Dan bitched and bitched. I just didnt understand what the deal was? Maybe they were a breed of extra sharp tooth kings! _________________ Let er eat! |

thats fine for certain days, but i hope you switch in the summer when it's gin clear water... id rather get cut on 18 or 27 than use the cable they call 60 and get less shots at fish. |

I like 27, it usually doesn't get cut unless I'm putting a ton a pressure on the fish, which usually isn't necessary with kings if you fight them long enough. My problem is I get impatient and make them dance too early at the gaff. _________________ Go fishing you can't catch them while sitting on the Couch!!! |

Well im sittin here right now as we speak trying to tie these leaders with 27lb seven strand. I cant get the wraps nearly as tight as showin in the pictures. Do you all have any tips as to how to wrap it so tightly? _________________ Give a man a fish he eats for a day... Teach a man to fish you've made a friend for life... |

I've heard the advantage of using single strand, is the ability to straighten it up more easily than stranded wire by "rubbing between 2 quarters." Haven't tried that yet ..anyone attest to that?
Also, I know for sure.. had cobe shy away from #60 7-strand when using it for my big king rod, but could anyone attest to getting cobes to hit when using #27? |

No. 4 VMC hooks, 29# Malin single strand, and 70# Bill Fisher (KROK) swivels. Make the leader 12" to 16" long tie it on to 15# pink Ande. Using a 706 and an 8' fiberglass rod you'll jack 'em all day long. _________________ Rama Jama Yella Hama ROLL TIDE ROLL |

40lb is cursed. i have seen many many fish lost both big and small to it being bit through. just use 60lb for the larger baits and 27lb for smaller baits. _________________ How, given the canine teeth and close-set eyes that declare the human animal to be a predator, had we come up with the notion that oat bran is more natural to eat than chicken |
