704z QuestionOk.... Here is the dumbest question yet.....
706z is a manual bail I know this...
704z is a wire bail..... It can be converted to a manual bail.....
Now did Penn ever make straight from the factory a manual bail 704z....
Told ya its a stupid question......

No Penn never made a Factory manual 704. They did make a Factory Manual kit as a seperate option.

I have seen one and the guy said it was a 704z
he said he bought it from penn.
It looks identical to the 706z.
The differnce I notice in the 704z and the 706z
The rotor cup is smaller on the 704z
So I am wonder if penn messed up and put a 706z rotor cup and spool on the 704z.

i am not going to say what they never done, but would go with king and say he did not get it from penn. maybe a 706 with a 704 side plate.

Steve,
How could I tell the 2 apart. Identification wise.

cant really that i know of..., they both have the same everything except. rotor, spool, side plate emblem. maybe someone else can chime in on this one. as conversions are a more recent thing since 706's prices have risen so much. king just finished a conversion, maybe he saw something... i think outlaw just finished one also.

Oh btw
I am still waiting to see if my supplier has anymore spools. I spoke to them yesterday and they said they might but wasn't sure. I bought the last of what they had in the warehouse in California now they are checking the jersey warehouse. As soon as they let me know I will let you and outlaw know.

Never got up with the one guy.
I missed a 705 on ebay that same day for $30
If the misses gets one she gets one if not oh well.

The reel I just re-furbed was a 706. I put a 704 side cover on it. The differences between 704 and 706 that I know of are of course the rotor and spool. The keyed washer that secures the rotor to the main shaft is different, and the bearing retainer for the 706 doesn't have the ramp that trips the bail like a 704 has. The 704 retainer will work with a 706 rotor, but the 706 will not work with the 704. At least I don't think it will.
I did buy a 704 on Ebay that had a Coffee Grinder handle on it. Prolly just a 706 handle someone put on it. I got a white knob 706 handle and a nice blue 704 for the price of a new 706 handle.

So by that being said the easiest thing to do is look and the bearing retainer to see it is ramped or not.

yeah I think so. One of the good things about Penn reels is the parts availability, and being able to interchange alot of parts.

I think I saw the same reel you are speaking of and it was on ebay. I asked myself the same question and I think its a 706 with a torpedo handle instead of the speed handle.

The black spool 706's came with a torpedo handle at least mine did.

The original 706Zs did come with the torpedo handle.

Check out the number of parts labeled XX-704 in the 706 schematic
http://www.fishermansheadquarters.com/PDF/706Z.pdf

The 12 parts that make the 706 unique from the 704 are...
1(Housing), 15(Handle), 21A(Bearing Retainer), 27(Rotor Cup), 35 (Line Roller), 35A(Roller Bearing), 36(Bail Lock Nut),
37(Rotor Cup Washer), 45(Housing Plate), 47(spool), 103(Bearing Cap), 132(Roller Washer)

The only differnce in the 706z and a 704z is the rotor cup and spool.

both my black spool 706's came with coffee grinder handles

I've got one with a torpedo, the newest ones have a sort of rubberized drag nut plus the grinder handle.

as always great visual aids by dave, however they just cover the z series. if you notice on those schematics the 706z has a extra bearing on the drive train that the 704z do not have part# 55 . that is on the latest models with anodized spool. however on the earlier version regardless of what was stamped on a body it was the same. a 706 rotor should be just a bolt on to a 704 or 705 body with correct retainer and spool washer.

I have a 704 manual conversion that I believe came from Penn. Has anyone had problems with the line roller not rolling with their 704 manual kit? It rolls if I move it with my finger but it doesn't roll if I pull drag off the reel or when I'm reeling in line. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this? I've oiled it and tried loosening it some with no luck.

justin, the ones i have had were the same way however if pressure was applied the roller would roll just fine.

There have been a lot of aftermarket kits on ebay lately. They are known to have problems. I have had no problems with the kits from Penn at all.
Try pulling the roller and using some white grease inside it instead of oil. That worked well on a 710 roller for me that was sticking bad.

Thanks Steve and Robert. I'll try that and keep tinkering with it.

I
had two 705 greenies restored, and the Penn manual roller kits I had installed during restoration wouldn't roll properly. I added a roller washer, bushing and roller from the SS series, and it rolls much better, but with the washer, the shaft is a little short to fully thread the nut. If tightened to just the right degree, it might roll perfectly. Some blue threadlock should keep the nut from falling off. Ball bearings should fit, too, but this all starts to add up on the cost. I'm not a tech person. A decent technicican should be able to set up a roller to work perfectly. I think it's important that the roller roll freely, especially under a load. Just MHO.

A technicican is a technician who can make it work. I'm a technicican't.

I ordered a manual kit for my 704Z from Scott's. Somebody on the forum gave me the link. It cost 30 bucks and was delivered in about 3 days. I still have not put it on, as I really don't use it much in fresh water, but I will have it on when I come back to the beach.

Yea, SB&T is the only place I am aware of that still has the kits made by Penn. Only problem is his shipping is so expensive.
