Anyone Reel Right Handed But Me.

I grew up fishing baitcasters only in 99% freshwater and they were all right hand reeling. Later finesse worm fishing became popular so I bought a few spinning reels. I tried to reel with my left hand and it felt funny so I changed the handles to the right side.

When I was fishing the pier I noticed about one in 15 people reeled right handed and the rest reeled with the left hand.

I was going to buy a Mitchell reel off someone at the pier with a nice rod but the handle was on the left side and could not be moved. The guy said you must be left handed and I said no I just reel that way.

I guess its how you learned but I am thinking about trying to learn left handed reeling again to see how it feels.

I'm righthanded and have mostly used spinners my whole life. My right arm is stronger than my left so thats why the last three baitcasters I have bought have been lefthand retrieve. I feel I am more accurate with my right arm than my left and can throw harder=farther.

I got a nice 303.....LOL  bought it as a 302 but someone had switched the handle to the other side....so I swapped it back.... so now have a 303 with no use for it.  Guess it'll go on ebay.

My son reels with his right hand so when he goes fishing with me
I have to change the handle for him. I guess it what your used too

I'm left handed. That means I reel with my right hand and hold the rod with my left hand. How do you hold a baseball bat, left handed or right handed? What ever side of the plate you bat from you swing that baseball bat horizontal when batting. Now imagine swinging it vertical. Thats the way you cast a rod. From this I think you can determine whats more comfortable to you.

Guilty of that

T-boy, I'm just the opposite. I grew up throwing spinning rods so when I started using baitcasters flipping for bass, I bought lefthanders. That way I didn't have to switch hands when casting.

I agree with that.  After I cast I always have to change the reel to my left hand. Problem is now I have about 10 baitcasters that reel right handed and they can't be changed.

Think I will move the handle on some spinning reels and give it a good chance and see how I like it.

T-Boy, look at classifieds..I have one of those elusive left mitchells for sale..

I also only buy left handed baitcasters... much easier to use in my opinion.

The theory on spinning tackle is that the dominant arm/hand holds the weight and leads the fish and the less dominant takes up the line. The theory on levelwinds is the opposite, the dominant arm/hand "winches" in the catch.  Casting on either is with the dominany arm. I guess I learned this way, it seems as natural as can be to me.

It's the old "different strokes for different folks".  I don't believe there's a right or wrong way for everyone.  What feels right or seems easier for me may be awkward for someone else.

My approach to fishing has always been efficiency... I can work a left handed baitcaster much more efficiently than I can a right handed one... but with spinning gear or a convention reel, I prefer a right handed reel.

Lots of R-handed 'Bass & Redfish Pros' are now using L-handed baitcasters so they don't have to change hands w/the rod & get ~5% more casts/day... I tried but can't get used to it... I reel w/my left on spinners & right on baitcasters & bottom-rods as do most w.e. warriors...
