built new gaffs

Wasn't happy with the first one so I tried again. This time I tried to do a little better job on the welding. Made one out of 1/2 inch and 2 more out of 3/8 inch stainless steel rod.
This is the 1/2 inch gaff.

These are all the gaff we made. the 3 in the back are 3/8 inch rod.
We should be ready for most anything now. They were a lot of fun to make. I just hope they work well. Can't wait to try them out.

Hope the pictures work. May need help again.

Are you wanting to sell any?
stvtackett

i'm with hijacker, you got a price on one of you prototypes???
kcub

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think about selling them. One has been promiced to a friend. I wouldn't mind making more if needed but stainless is high. What are they worth or what would you pay for one? There was only three on ebay and they don't really compare.

$50 sound good to you? You can get a king gaff for like 35 at a tackle shop.
RD's Sharkin Safaris

LOL Sorry Bro. $50 Don't even cover the cost of materials and welding supplies to make these gaffs.

These are 100% Stainless Steel. Not Brass. Not Regular Steel. So they Shouldn't rust. S.S Rods are Not cheap but are BEST for Water Conditions such as hooks and Gaffs and Cables.

kcub Welcome to the forum.      Your gaffs look good and obviously made with quality material.  Many of us have paid over $100 for high quality cobia gaffs (1/2" stainless) with a rope, with proper care they will last a lifetime and are a one time purchase.  You should charge for material plus whatever you feel your time is worth.  If you have a learning curve maybe your early gaffs will be a couple of dollars less, but of course that is completely up to you.
It's good to see someone taking the initiative to put out some good work.
stvtackett

3/8" are 150 bones
1/2" are 180 bones

Re Price on Shark Attack Gaffs.

If you recall I said that these prices ARE NOT set in stone that we are just starting this out and workin on them. We don't know for sure if my friend " kcub " will be making many. We are just doing a feel for it and researching like quality products all over the web.

YET at the same time we CANNOT sell items that do not pay for themselves. When I see guys who spend $600 - $900 dollars on custom Cobia and King Reel/Rod combos plus my Fellow Shark Fisherman spending well over $1000 dollars on thier Combos then a FAIR price is not unreasonable to ask for a product that should last a lifetime.

These Gaffs are Stainless Steel. I invite anyone to call a local welder and see what they will charge to make the same gaff using Stainless Steel, 5 tines (Barbs) and wide Rope Gap. After they do the initial design & blueprinting, welding (labor), and pay the initial upfront cost of materials then yes these things run WELL over $100 dollars. Look at the small gaffs you buy in tackle shops. 16/0 Triple Tines Weighted Gaffs run anywhere from $36 - $58. These are NOT Stainless Steel. And virtually unusable in trying to gaff larger gamefish from piers espesially Sharks. " kcub " come up with this design to get more Tines in the Fish and a Wider Tine spread to make it easier to gaff lager fish.

True these are not for Everyone or Every Buget. I myself am on a fixed income on Social Security Disability trying to raise 3 teen boys. But I can budget for items that I KNOW will last a lifetime with care. And this IS one of them. Kyacks are another. And Shark Bait. LOL LOL

So in conclusion yes they may seem high to some. But after you do a lil research into it, you will find that they are VERY economical.
Jigslinger

As far as coming up with the design, well, that's been around for a long time. They are nice gaffs and I hope you get the prices you are looking for. I built this one a couple years ago out of 3/8 stock. It just fits in a five gallon bucket. I plan on building a smaller one for kings and if I come across some 1/2" stock, I'll replace this one with one made of it. I'll probably bring a few extras with me next spring when I come down.

blaminack

I do hope that you get some buyers close to that price. I too sell some hand made things that I have had very few orders this year for because of what i have to charge to recoup my investment in time and materials. The current economy has every one looking for those high quality items to use that will not need to be replaced. For me I will have to keep looking because I cannot afford a gaff in that range.
Nite Legend

I know I can get stainless cobia gaffs for anywhere from 100-150 bucks...

Thank you WD

Thanks Y'all.

Thanks guys for your imput. I appreciate it. " kcub " is one of my best friends and we do alot of Shark Fishing together. We have been discussing for some time the pros and cons of the Larger gaffs that you can purchase and they all just seem really inadiquate for gaffing sharks.

So ol' " kcub" got industrious one evening at home and made one up and brought it down to the pier as a surprise for me. He knew I would fall in love with the joker. LOL LOL It Works Great on gaffing Sharks and just what we have been searching for. :D

I see y'all have come to the same conclusions and I do like the designs and gaffs I seen posted here. Thanks guys. I love the long shank which helps in controling that Shark or Big fish as you are bringing it over the rail.

You guys really do rock here on your imput and I speaking for myself really do appreciate the imput.     And I know " kcub " appreciates it also.

 Thanks again so much guys!!!!
Garb

Man 150-180 bucks for a gaff of stainless steel.

Thats a rip.

3/8 stainless rod 12ft only cost 22.00

If anyone is interested I will build the same gaffs shown here for $75 EACH

Sorry under cut the price like that.
But the way the ecomony is and fishing is exspensive already I don't believe and trying to make 1000% profit on everything I sell.

Again sorry but that is a ripoff.
kcub

Ok, here we go. This started out as a "looky what I did post" that turned into a "do you want to sell one post". That was not my intintion. But I do appreciate the requests.
I first bought a Offshore Angler™ 2-1/2'' Hook Bridge Gaff. This little thing cost me $65.00 at Bass Pro. It worked ok but was now what I was looking for.
I looked around for a while before I started and decided that I liked the 5 tine design the best. (been around for ever) So Thats what I built.
As for the prices. This is the breakdown. To get the stainless is a 80 mile round trip for me. (last time I sent my wife, so now i have a list of thing I "REALLY" need to get done) So I estimate that there is about $40.00 in the stainless and my welding supplies. This is to make one gaff.
It takes me about 3 hours to make the gaffs. I may be slow but I'm still learning. I feel my time is worth $25/hr. to do this. (thats less than half what my local welders wanted) He may have been faster but there was no cost savings. Plus I can say I DID IT.
That brings the cost to $ 115 for the 3/8 inch gaff. The 1/2 inch will be more , say $125. because of the material cost. (and its a pain to bend).
"RD" is my friend that lives at the beach. I live in Enterprise, Alabama and don't get down to the beach as often as I would like. He is at the PCB pier often so I am going to leave one of the gaffs with him for people to look at if they are interested. Ill post when Im coming down to the Pier and will bring the gaffs i have.
Hijacker3, you were the first one interested. If you want one of the gaffs, I'll sell you one for $65.00.
If there is enough interect I'll make some more.

Sorry for the long post. And again thanks for the replies.

Kcub,

I did not mean anything by my post. I am the type of person that will give the shirt off my back if someone was to ask me for it. Just like the gaffs I am not in it to make a 1000% profit like I said, I enjoy building things and I have the capablities to build things. My money comes from the enjoyment of seeing someone using a product I made. There is nothing better to know you made someone happy and given the ability to get their fish.
Tiderider

Buck I think your prices are fine.  I paid the same money for my 1/2" Ronnie Moore gaff a couple of years ago and didn't even flinch.  Back on March 11 it was the only gaff on the pier and killed the first ling of the season.  The way I see it now, I got a gaff and a $100 rebate (season pass for first fish).  Yeah a quality gaff is worth every dollar spent.
YankeeFisher

I am speaking for myself but I know I have spent tons of money on collecting the best fishing gear possible so I dont have to pay double in replacing items. If the gentleman wants 125 I will be more then willing to pay it if the craftsmanship is up to par as it seems to be. As soon as I get back I will be sending you a PM to get one for myself and keep up the good work!
RD's Sharkin Safaris

LOL LOL I told y'all it was a " Work in Progress. " That is why I love Buck as my friend. LOL LOL He gets bored and comes up with these Niffty Ideals to make things and then brings em down I guess to see if I can Abuse them beyond thier limits. If I can't then NO ONE CAN!. LOL LOL

With Buck and Family it's ALWAYS something new and neat to try out EVERY trip down. Even if they DON'T come down fishing. LOL LOL Hint Hint Buck!!!!

Trust me y'all these jokers I would Personaly put up against the best and plan on trying mine out Mud Bogging and using it on a Winch and see how much Stress I can put on it before Gaffing a Shark. LOL LOL

And ya Know I Will Buck Bro!!!! LMFAO
blaminack

Wow, that would be a serious stress test! But exceedingly dangerous! Just look at what a gotcha did to Joe. I couldn't imagine doing a stress test on an 8-10 lb sharp five prong hook. I would suggest maybe putting it in on a tree branch with a rope hanging. Tie another rope around the gaff to keep it from falling to the ground. Add weight until something fails. Still dangerous. If a prong let got under stress it could fly through your windshield.
Rick

Hey kcub....I PMed you about a gaff...check your peivate messages.

Hey Blam please tell Joe from me, " Been There, Done That!" Had a Tourist get me with a Gotcha out on the State Park Pier a couple of years ago. Right through my thumb. Went home with the joker in my thumb. Got some Needle nose. Gritted my teeth. Cut the Hook. And pulled the rest on through. Aint paying the dang Hospital $600 to do it. LOL Tell him I feel for him. I truely do. LOL Dang Thing is PAINFUL!

As to the ol' Stress test. Well ol' Buck and Family have absolutely forbid me from doing it cause he has POLISHED up these Gaffs all nice and Shiney and PURTY Lookin. LOL LOL So noooooooooooooo worries on the Stress test takin place now.    So now I gotta hope I catch one of them 18-22 footer sharks to Stress test it out.
saltwaterjunkie

If some of you all are looking for some cheap Stainless steel go to your local grocerie store and go around back where they keep there broken shopping carts.I dont know about up north but down here they make them out of stainless and the bottom rack is made of 3/8 stock. Some of the stores are going to either plastic or coated steel but some still have the Good ones!SAVE ALOT in Lynn Haven still doesMost of the time they don't care if you take one but I would ask some body or wait until you and the boys polish off a HANDLE OR TWO and make the run

Gotcha Joe. I completely understand. Yeah Mine was in top, against bone, and out the bottom. Then the joker went and set the hook. OH JOY that day. I feel for ya I really do. Thats why when I see someone with a Gotcha I get REAL Gun shy and just back the heck up FAST and give em room even if I was there first. LMAO

And I appreciate Bill's concern about watching out for my ol' ugly Pus. :D
