Carving your own plugs?

I was just curious if anybody has tried carving their own inshore plugs? Or even their own bass lures? Ive been curious for a while and I finally broke down and bought a few blocks of wood today. I started one that I plan on using as a top water lure, so far the shape isnt too bad but I still need to sand it down pretty good but I was wonderin what the peanut gallery has to say! Lookin forward to the responses!

I made a couple of lures last winter.  They were wood and I used them in place of cigar minnows while king fishing.  They actually worked quite well and I got several hits and skyrockets but could never hook up a fish.  A king finally cut off the best of the two.  Here's a picture of several before paint and hooks, I can't find my finished pictures.  These were turned on a wood lathe and then the sides were sawed using a table saw and a homemade jig I designed.

Here's one of the finished product.

Obie.... you never cease to amaze me! You are like the fishing ghandi!

Thanks guys.  I should make some more.  It would kind of be like starting over since I only did the few and then stopped.  The hardest part of the "ciggy" was getting it weighted properly.

I rememeber when you brought that lure out. It looked awesome

Thanks Travis, I still have this one, the other one that got cut off was the shitznitzel.

All kidding aside. Those are fabulous. I never saw them that day you brought them to the pier. It kinda looks like a Super Spook minus the belly hook. I imagine its a lot heavier though, right?
Tiderider

I think the next few are going to have a front treble hook. Maybe then I'll actually hook a fish up.
Tiderider

Hey Calvin thanks.  Yeah they are about 9 inches long, weighted hard wood with a taper down the sides from head to tail.  They sink at about the same rate as a cig and were designed to be snobbled like a cig.  They were around 2 ounces or so.

I remember the one you brought out to the pier too, it was badass!!

it probably threw better than a cig as well huh...

Thanks again Travis.  I though the color of the one I lost was just awesome.  They're is quite a bit to the process of making a wood lure.  One step of the process includes sealing the wood.  I went old school and soaked them in boiled lindseed oil (BLO) for a couple of days.  Then they have to dry out for a couple of weeks if you want the primer to stick.

What kind if wood and were did you get the specks on this lure?
Tiderider

They were cut from genuine Home Depot hard wood dowels, which were labled as Brazillian Cherry (?).  As I'm not from Brazil I don't know much about that but I do know the wood was very dense and heavy.  As for specs, I just kind of winged it.

Wooden Plugs

After just returning to the south from 13 years in the NE, Wooden plugs are THE KING of lures up there...specifically Cedar plugs. Stripped Bass eat them up like candy and they cast excellently in a stiff wind. My favorite cedar is a bright yellow, but you can hardly tell that due to the blue fish teeth marks on it. I've tried a white one for the bobos here, and it's a blast watching the surface hits on it. Obie is right...it takes ALOT of time and effort to make your own plugs (To buy one up there, you can spend about 20-30) but the action and casting range they give is AWSOME!!! He's also right in if you don't seal the wood, then you'll have a wonderful collection of dried-up wood and hooks in no time.

DevnDeb, I learned what little I know from reading the forum at Striper's Online.  I'm sure you're more than familiar with that website.
