chickenbone beach

what do i need to shark fish off chicken bone? will large spinners and a 4/0 with mullet as bait work? plus what size leaders?
Boggy Basin Boy

A pistol a huge knife and about 100 home boys !!!!!!!!!!!!

haha..I would go with a bigger hook maybe a 9/0, some people use hooks way bigger than that..larger spinning rods will work, line capacity is the most important thing. mullet is a good bait, just cut them in half. Bluefish, skipjack, bonita and mackerel also work well.
kingling

fried chicken works good to

If your casting your bait then a large spinner will due just fine.  Just make sure you have enough line and your leader is short enought to cast.

If casting out your bait, you may want to consider using heavy mono and a bite leader.  Meaning you would tie at least 12 feet feet of say 60-80 mono (shock leader) to the main line and then using a swivel attach a 3' piece of sevenstrand to the heavy mono.  This allows you to cast further without fear of snapping your line.

Also if casting, I find it easier to let the weight slide all the way down to the bait.  Otherwise your bait and lead with wobble in the air and shorten your casting distance.

9/0 should work okay........just remember the bigger the bait the bigger the hook.

Hey Tyler I think he was talking about using a 4/0 reel not hook
nb&twil

ive had great success with big circle hooks (16/0) for shark fishing. i like it because i fall asleep with my head leaned against the senator in freespool with the clicker on. so when it makes a terrible noise and wakes me up, it takes me a second to wake up, throw it into gear and my hook up ratio is great. i feel it is best because anytime your clicker is going, the fish is going away from you and the hook will find its mark almost everytime!
this also reduces mortality rate to nearly zero. that is, if youre not trying to kill your catch.

no i practice catch and release mostly. today when i was diving we had a 7ft bull shark come up on us it was so awesome. but how far out should i paddle out the 4/0 senator.

If fishing on the gulf side just go past the first sand bar, if on the bay side.....just go out as far as you feel comfortable.  Just make sure you have enough line for a good run.

would spinners last on the gulf side or would i get spooled?
konz220

You could use spinning reels but your odds of getting spooled are not in your favor.  If you have something about the size of an 8500 with braided line you could do it.

I would still go for it and if I got spooled well then it would be one hell of a story!
jaceboat

yeah i thought about that. but i am taking a few friends for the first time and i am busting my butt to get enough money for leaders and i really dont think they would like getting spooled not to mention that i would have to buy new line after that.

Stuff for making leaders is cheaper than buying the pre made ones.  If you don't know how to do it shoot me a PM and we'll meet up sometime and I'll show you how to do it.  It's pretty dang easy.

I would still bring out the spinning outfits.....use smaller pieces of cut bait and you will probably catch some bull reds.

i know how to tie it but i am still in high school and have a really tight budget. i am going to try to work as much as possible to get money to buy stuff but i am about to get a mitchell 306 also so i want have as much money then to. but where can i get some cheap swivels and hooks? and how many leaders do u think i need
konz220

Man do i know about a tight budget.  You can get leader, hooks, and swivels for under 20 bucks.  Go to Academy or even the local bait shop.

You don't need anything fancy.......just some wire leader (90lb sevenstrand will work for smaller sharks)  Don't buy those super expensive swivels as they aren't needed since your main line is only going to be around 50lbs anyway (4/0 in mind).  You can get a 3 pack of 14/0 circle hooks for like 3 bucks.

I always carry at least one extra leader in case of a break off.

I tell ya what......shoot me a pm and i'll give you my cell number.  Call me with any questions you may have......I'll be glad to get another angler hooked on shark fishing!  Hell I a kick ass leader made up right now that you can have.  I'll be down that way either tomorrow or for sure on Friday.....just let me know and I'll drop it off.
jaceboat

yeah so i will have about three or four rods out so about 8 leaders i guess. thanks i pm'd u on penscolafishingforum.com and i was the one that went off the pier. got one run but no hook up.
