Dauphin Island Dock- Sat Aug 8

I was to meet up with my brother-in-law at their place on Dauphin Island for some speck fishing about 6am.
It was a muggy morning with a good SE breeze about 15 knots.
There were storms out in the Gulf, but none near land at that point.

I arrived at their place @ 5:05 am and checked out his underwater light.
The white trout were having a party...

About 1.5 seconds later I dropped a jig in their midst and plucked out a nice 10" WT...

Most were 8"-10" though I could see an occasional one a little larger hanging deeper.
After catching (and releasing) a couple of dozen in the next 25 minutes
I decided to try a little different tactic with the onset of daylight.
A 3" Gulp Shrimp on a 1/4 ounce jighead bounced up off the bottom produced a larger (12 1/2") WT and then this lil guy...

That was neat though it was a few inches short of being a keeper.
Just before 6 am I had a jolting strike by a noticably larger fish.
Working it to the surface I was like
This thing didn't look like it would fit in the little net I brought to land fish with, and it took three (heart-stopping) attempts to get it in there.
But it did

23" long, 19 1/2" girth and it weighed 5 1/4 pounds

I'd been fishing less than an hour and it'd already had the makings of a fine day.
We soon headed off to the 'happy fishing grounds' in the boat.

We tried 4 likely looking spots for blackfish without so much as a sniff,
so we changed our tactics to hunting for speckled trout.
Fishing around a rig and the DI Bridge produced no bites either,
so we tried a few spots around the 'Shoals' west of the bridge.
By 9:30 we'd still not had a bite, and worse yet a storm was skirting the island so we donned the raingear.
Fortunately we experienced only a brief sprinkle though the wind had picked up to about 20 knots.
About the time the sun came back out I had a trout hit a live bait on the surface, but he missed it.
Encouraged by that strike we vowed to give the spot 10 more minutes.
Well about 9 1/2 minutes later I got another bite, a school trout about 18".
We finally, broke the ice!
Soon another fish (a little bigger) joined that one in the live well.
And then another (a little bigger) after that.
About every 10 minutes for that next hour we'd get a bite and add a little bit larger fish to our creel.
By 11 am we'd the heat was getting to us and the AC beckoned along with a shower & a sammich.
But we had six good specks 2#-3#+
Here's my two biggest (21" @ 3# and 22" @ 3.3#)

What a fine morning it'd been!
Good fishing weather, the best kindof companionship, and nice fish to boot.

Thank You Lord, it doesn't get much better than that anywhere on Earth!

Great report - makes this North Alabama fisherman wish he lived close to salt water!   Just a couple of weeks now and at least I'll get to do some fishing on vacation. New pier, I'm on my way!

Hey are you fishing near okaloosa island? That bridge in the sunrise pictrue looks familier.

Also how do you catch those flounder to? Is it a bottom rig with a shrimp or something? Also do you need to be near some structure to catch all of those fish?
