shannon
what kinda rods do you think we use at the pier?
those are "surf rods'" but we dont call them that

Those charts probably work great for some folks.  I tape guides on every blank I wrap and adjust accordingly.  Thanks for posting however as those numbers can help to get you close if you're just starting to build. 8) As previously noted we build rods a bit different around here then the rest of the rod building world. :fish:

Having a wire frame stripper guide 50mm or larger doesn't mean its a surf rod.

no
im saying that 9 and 10 foot rods arnt called pier rods to the rest of the world even though thats what we call them
everyone else calls them surf rods

Like Obie said, rods from the piers here are different than the rest of the rod building world(not necessarily better or worse, but way different). I would say  9 or 10 foot rods are bare minimal for surf rods in the rest  of the world . I would classify most of the larger 8+ foot rods used on the pier as medium heavy to heavy jig/live bait rods with surf rod guides.

Yep, we have historically lived on jig and live bait blanks.

That last guide size/spacing chart is for Fuji concept guides.  That is a whole new can of worms.

I think the next rod I build will have those on it though.  I had a 4.5' UL that was factory wrapped with Fuji concept hardloy guides.  That little rod was the best casting UL I have ever used, and I have owned or borrowed several in the last 35 years.  It may be time to try concept guides on a larger rod.
