Found this while walking the dog

This was after I moved him. I took the dog out for his morning sniff n' spray and found this little guy sitting in the dog's favorite spot to leave little land mines.

pierbird

your dogs number 2 looks like a cottonmouth
Jigslinger

Looks like a hognose to me.

I say cottonmouth as well.  Either way, it would have been dead before the picture was taken if I had found it.  I'm not saying all snakes are bad, ie: king snake, garter snake, chicken snake.  All others are killed on sight.
Cast-er-long

That is a cottonmouth

If you can't see the eyes looking right down on it's head then it's a bonafide cottonmouth.  I'd bet dollar to donuts that is a cottonmouth.
seanspots

Moccasin.
jewfish

Ok, if it had been a moccasin, he would have been dead in a heartbeat. I picked him up after I got a good look at his eyes and made sure he didn't have the "cat-eyes". It was a water snake and one of the very few snakes I've seen while living here.

He's back in the woods now.

You need an outdoor show.

Water snake! No gold colors on the side of the head. Alot of people in the south are snake crazy. Scared of a damn snake.   They want no part of us humans. How many cows do you see bit by snakes? I dont know of any. Im sure there are instances but not to many.
Dow

Yea, Kenny has it right. the common cottonmouth has a gold band that runs from the eyes aft to what would be "ears".  That one is just a water snake.  Also with moccasin's the stripes tend to be a lot darker, almost hard to see, when they get larger then 3 feet the stripes aren't as dominate, almost none existent unlike the common water snake.
Dow

Another fun fact about moccasin's.  If you were close enough to take that picture and it had been a mocc, it more than likely would have charged you.  Mocc's are well known for literally chasing people a good distance.  I've been chased by a few as a kid.  They are very aggressive when provoked even in a subtle manner.
jewfish

Cottonmouths are also alot larger around the waist shall we say. Same with most rattlers. I killed one by a retention pond one time that was about as big around as my forearm.
WD

It's a water moccasin
jewfish

Banded water snake, he would not have been alive for that picture if it had been a cottonmouth.

I think you are talking about a blackracer, a moccasin want charge you, I use to raise them with a friend years ago. They will stand their ground with you, but would rather get away to.
jewfish

Funny thing, he was just outside on the pavement and the old lady almost ran over him, then called me, from outside to come kill him. She got mad at me for not killing him once I realized it was the same snake from the other day. I'm not a fan of water snakes but I will not kill once.

When I was a kid I had pretty free reign of my activities. We were really poor and had fun finding ways to make money. We sold Garfish and Chopique (Cajun name for Bowfin or Mudfish) We heard that there was a Laboratory that bought poisonous snakes to produce anti-venom. My brother and I caught dozens of snakes! We lived in Louisiana and snakes are every where. We used an old fishing rod and phone cord to make a lasso and grabbed them and put them in buckets. My dad came home from offshore and found the snake collection and beat our tails! Then in a REAL move of genius he made us dump them out to get rid of them... seems like it would have been safer to at least see if there really was a Lab that bought them.

I have a friend that says that he is only afraid of 5 snakes, but that he is deathly afraid of those 5...

big ones, little ones, live ones, dead ones and fake ones.

Hey Manny, maybe you can rig it up for cobia, put it 300 foot back behind your boat and troll down the bar and zig zag between the bars, tangle a guides prop with braid, then cuss the guide. That guide still has the rubber eel if you want it back.
You can PM me for his number.
jewfish

The owner of that boat has since moved to Louisiana.

oh well kewl lookin snake anyways
jewfish

The snake that I took a picture of, I also picked him up, checked his eyes and no fangs either. Cottonmouths, rattlers and copperheads have the "cat eye", this one had a round eye.

No Shawn, google that @$%^ boyyy....  A moccasin will charge you fast..  They are very aggressive and will stand their ground I've been chased many a time in the creek behind my house and yes, I know the difference between a cotton mouth and a water snake.  I used to keep them in buckets and feed them leopard frogs.
Dow

Also, how do you confuse a cotton mouth for a racer?  As far as I have known racer's a one of the fastest to run from alien presence....
