Friday, 18 SeptWent out before daylight again. Got the first King caught this morning. Hate to say this again, but, I caught him on a Gotcha using my Spanish rig. The Kings were there but I didn't see much in the way of Spanish. The Kings were not what I would call "red hot" But several were caught while I was there and I left at 0730.
Did get to see Brad and Nancy while I was there. Don't know how they did after I left. Ms Pat was there but she refused to take one of my bubble rigs although I did offer.
Here is a pic of the little King on the Gotcha and Spanish rig. 22 lbs. 1 oz.

Obie, I saw a nice Sailfish before I left this morning and Ms Pat had already seen three so I have no doubt there were 10 sightings.

Ah come on now. Don't do Jim like that. It probably didn't take longer than the King that Devon caught during Cobia season this year.
(sorry Devon for bringing this up!)
Remember that? A Sunday afternoon. April 26 to be exact. End of the pier was elbow to elbow literally. The Cobia guys had the east and southeast side and the King fishermen had the rest. I remember being on the SE end with Mike Quena, Mike Clark (Brown Marlin), and David Broxson. Devon fought that fish all over the place 6 times sideways. Everybody was giving him crap and snide remarks. I felt sorry for him. Nobody would move out of his way. I think I called first shot several times (on long range fish) during his fight. But the important thing is that Devon did put the fish on the deck and I got a pic of it HERE.

Actually, it was a short fight for me and the King. I never had to go across the front of the pier a single time. Since the wind was blowing from an easterly direction, I had stepped to the east side of the front of the pier just to put me on the upwind side of those "experts" ( laughing my butt off here) drifting cigsicles. For some silly reason, they get a little irate if you snag their line with a Gotcha and drag their cig in to the pier. For those who get irate, I can only say, "Put a little sport into your King fishing and do it with artificials."
Anyway, on my second cast of the morning, the King slammed my Gotcha about 40 feet from the pier. He made a nice long run straight southeast which was the perfect direction since no one was fishing east of me. The Slammer 460 and the 7 1/2 foot St. Croix rod took the steam out of him rather quickly and I horsed him back to the pier. He took off on another short run, again to the southeast but again the pressure brought him back to the pier quickly. This time we did the little walk on the pier with the fish directly below me but we walked on the east side of the T away from the people fishing the front of the pier. By the time we reached the back of the octagon on the east side, he was ready for the gaff. When the gaff hit the water, he took off for about 20 feet but the rig hauled him right back and it was a done deal. Stuck. Hauled up and flopping on the pier in less time than others were doing with their full grown King rigs. The King and I posed for a couple of quick pictures then I stepped out of sight of everybody else, kissed my new Spanish rig right on the lips, patted her on the butt, and promised to keep her.

NEW RODOBIE, THAT ROD WAS AWSOME. HAD A LOT OF COMMENTS FROM THE GUYS. ALL I CAN SAY, THAT WAS THE 1ST OF 2ND CAST WITH THAT ROD (CASTS GREAT) AND HOOKED INTO THIS FISH. I SAW A FISH DOWN DEEP, BUT LOOKING TO THE WEST, THE GLARE WAS TERRIBLE. ALL OF A SUDDEN HE SHOT STRAIGHT UP SWALLOWED A LARGE THREADFIN, TOOK 250-300 YARDS OFF ON 1ST RUN (HOLDS OVER 400 YARDS OF 17 LB LINE), AND THE REST IS HISTORY. THANKS TO YOU FOR RE-WRAPPING THE ROD AND STEVIE T FOR PAINTING THE REEL, IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR ME AND MY ALABAMA SET UP. MAY I SHOULD JUST RETIRE IT NOW......... THAT'S A JOKE. IT WILL SEE A LOT OF ACTION FOR SURE.

Here is my story and pics of a great day on the pier. We got there about 5:45 just before daybreak. Started fishing using live hardtails for bait. Nancy and I both got flipper at the same time. I think Jim hook up with his 22#er while we were messing around with flipper. He got it on his Spanish rig. Nice king Jim on a gotcha. Here is a pic of that fish
I finally hooked up to a nice king about 8:00 fought him back to the pier and the hook pulled at the gaff. We left about 9:00 to go get some food and get to some beach time. We came back to the pier about 2:00. The bite was already on. After missing a couple of fish I heading down to the bar to hang out where Nancy was fishing. I put a live hardtail on and about five minutes later a nice 20#er came up and ate my bait. Took me running down the pier to the end then fought him for 15 minutes and got him on the deck.
Then a little later I had left to end to re-tie a new leader and cam back to the end and Ms Pat had hooked up to a nice fish. I did not know at the time that the fish was as big as it was. During the time she was landing the fish several other kings were landed. She go the king up and I was shocked to see this big a$$ king. The biggest one have seen not in a photo. Here are some pics. Ms Pat it was nice to finally meet you
Then as we were getting ready to leave. Thomas hooked up on sailfish. I got to see it tail walk on the bar and then do one nice jump before it headed out to sea. Took him about 20 minutes to get it in. During that time this guy caught another nice king.
A few minutes later Thomas got the sail back to the pier. Here are some pics. What a great day at the pier. Can’t wait to see you again next time.
