Gator Blanks are IN! UPDATED 11/23Went to Mudhole today and Todd showed me the blanks that Blackfin rods had produced. I had met the Owner of Blackfin rods at Mudholes open house a few weeks back. Long story short, the guy got the original mandrel from Gator and produced the new blanks with it.
Todd had 4 blanks, all straight, quality of blank better than original and meets all the spec's of the original. I bought 1 just in case the guy got hit by a truck and we found ourselves scrambling for replacements.

So about what should it cost to get a custom rod built if you start w/a ~$40 blank & use 'avg' components & 'basic' wraps...
|
Rick
|
You will spend another $50 on components......not sure what people charge to wrap, but i would you would be looking at $50 to $75.

blank-40
guides-30
grips-25
guide wraps-50[5 guides]
-------------------------
design[optional] 30 to 50 depending on how complex
-------------------------------------------------------------
basic= 125-150
design=150 and up depending on amount of time spent on thread work
the prices are probly a little over but whenever i figure for this kind of stuff i always want to set an amount more than what it will be just to be safe and have enough

Cool... thanks... I'm gonna try to sell a few 'shelf' rods & get someone to build me a custom or 2, since you guys have a line on nice $40 blanks... the $120+ blanks were putting the rods at a $250+ price point that made getting an 8' & a 9' rod sort of pricey...

Just received one of the new Gator T90L's. The action is actually a tad less slow and a tad firmer than the originals (read this as better) The diameter of the new rod compared to couple of old rods I have is less than 1/64" at the reelseat location. A size 22 reelseat slides to within around 8 inches of the butt. The butt diameter is .9375 inch, the tip is a 10.5. The walls of the glass is around 3/64" thick at the butt. I gave it big old bend test and it feels really nice. My overall opinion is "boys we are back in business". I can't wait to built it up and give it a sling. It's going to make a wonderful all around rod and will be great for ling and big bait kings.
Thanks Rick for doing a bunch of the grunt work to get these blanks back in our hands.

I can only report on the very few new Gator blanks I've received. The T90L review is above and I've built a few on the new U696H. It's bigger in the butt and a bit firmer than the originals.

If my memory is not fading too badly, the T90H is a good all around cig-slinging king rod, if they get that one worked out please let me know.

I will call the guy who is making them and see if he was able to get the Mandrels for the old 90H's. I would think he did.
The action on the one T90L is great. I don't remember the old but this one I like.

the t90h is a 9ft heavy action rod. it could be used for kings but is better as strictly ling rod. a t90l is a good king, tarpon, and cobia rod. the 596 is a good cig slinging rod.

A tad stiffer than the old . great, sound like it may not need a couple off the tip for cobia.
