Getting some kings from a boat.

What would you guys say is the best way to get kings from a boat? Or really anygame fish from a boat. I dont plan on trolling, and I am not going to go more then 2 miles off the beach. I saw this pretty cool thing on TV where you stick it in the water and rattle it around a bit and it realeses chum, and the rattling noise sounds like a feeding frenzy and attracts all kind of fish, then you cast out a minnow or spoon thing and just wait for some fish to arrive. Would that work?

Also there are some jetties that I plan on fish some jetties. I saw on some TV show where they were just casting some plastic baits near the jetties and hooking up with some Jacks. Would that work to?

This is a fairly difficult question. The reason is that you just have to be where the fish are, and that is the best part about trolling. It is one of the easiest ways to locate the fish. Anchoring up and chumming can work if you are close to structure that you are up current from. Find structure and work from there. Structure attracts the bait and bait attracts gamefish.

Go to the whistle buoy or the weather buoy, you are guranteed a fish out there.....

in a boat- bouys or bait
either go to the bouys or follow the bait

In a boat, I toss out a couple Windcheaters and work around the edge of the bait school or breaking fish. Around the buoys I'll freeline whatever bait I can find nearby.

I've anchored and chumed up snapper before. Mangrove and Red. Usually a shark will show up eventially.

This sounds like you may be fishing from a small boat and could possibly be inexperienced with Gulf water. If you go watch the weather, marine forecast, etc. Even a few miles out in an undersized boat can get harrowing. I was out once as a late teen at of Gulf Shores in a 15' boat and am glad I'm still here to type as it got too rough very fast, and the pass got really nasty. It just wasn't smart, so if this assumption is true, be very very careful. Don't be afraid to troll a little if you do go, it is a dang good way to find fish, and you don't burn all that much gas doing it if that is your concern.

How far is the closest bouy? Also once I get there, do I anchore or just drift? Also should I just freeline a live LY or something? Would a dead cigar minnow work?

Also I might do some trolling. Do you have to have a downrigger? Do you have to troll over structers or just troll anywhere you want. I am probably going to be using some clark spoons and one of those skirt things with a dead cig attached to it.

And yeah my boat is only 21' long and it is  not a center consle or anything.
stvtackett

if you are that inexperinced you should buy some frozen cigs, go out of the pass and see if can catch some live one or ly's around the bouy. go a mile or 2 east or west of the pass. anchor at the second bar and put a fly line out with a live bait and snobble a cig working the draw. you will catch fish...
Kingfshr

Be very careful in the pass at Panama City. Depending on the tide the current can be very treacherous. Be sure you have a VHF Radio.

Slow troll the live lys dude if you think you are going slow try to go slower Turbo troll off one corner of your skiff and a chum bomb off the other Watch the lys and dont let them skip Occasionally stop and drift and xtra chum then zig back through your slick Small motor works great for this

Which jetties do you speak of?

If you are not very experienced on the water, I suggest finding a local person from the forum to go with you and show you the ropes.

You know the bay near Okaloosa Island Pier? At the mouth of the bay there are two jetties that stick out on both sides. I was watching this TV show called Florida Sportsman and they were fishing some jetties and catching a ton of Jack crevalis and some spanish and blues. They were using some plastic minnow so I think i might try that.
stvtackett

jetties are realy dangerous. if you plan on anchoring close to a fishing the jetties you better know what you are doing. them rocks are not very forgiving...
Big Mack

Im just going to kind of dift near them with in casting distance
Kingfshr

DO NOT EVER SHUT DOWN YOUR MOTOR NEAR A JETTY! Things could happen very fast.
Big Mack

You know i think i am just going to troll around the beach a little. and mabye try bouys and jetties when i know the waters a little more.

I am going to try one rod with a clark spoon, and the other with a skirt with a frozen cigar, or mabye a plastic bait.

but I just have one more question.

When trolling, Do you need a down rigger? Or do you just cast it out as saf as you can and let it go where ever it wants? Also should you troll near structers or anything, or can you just troll the open water?

Hey check out these guys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UsGnrnr2Ns

Yeah I think that is what I am pretty much going to do.
stvtackett

they did not yield much results. they could have caught that on the pier alot cheaper...
Big Mack

Yeah but you cant baise it off of one fish they caught, and I dont care if i dont catch any kings and just spanish, i just want to catch something, probably besides remoras though.
stvtackett

did not base it on the 1 fish they caught on video, based it on the decription of thier trip to the right of the video wher they said they caught 3 fish. if i were to go fishing in a boat with a motor in water that looked like that and only caught 3 fish i would be mad. they did not know any better i guess.

No, you don;t need a downrigger to catch kings, especially in the depth of water you are talking about. The length of your boat is OK as long as the weather is good, but you do need to watch it as 21 is not allthat big either. I suggest you go to Half Hitch and let those guys set you up with tacke, King Busters, treble hooks, wire, etc. If you don't have a galvanized trailer (by the shound of this you have a freshwater boat so if not ignore the following) I would not dunk it in salt water. Try and get one of the marinas to dunk it for a fee, it will rot that trailer out. You can't rinse all the salt out of it. If it is galvanized you are OK. You HAVE to wash it down well every day and flush everything out extremely well.  And know the no wake zones, they make a lot of money ticketing people not familiar with the area. I usually put 2 outer lines out and 2 inner lines closer in. If you have a T-top you can put the 5th off of it way out. Good luck.

If you are planing on drifting a jetty be sure to be cautious to the shore fishermen and give them 100 yards or so of fishing space as some hot head may fling lead at you if in what he perceives his fishing space.
I am planing on doing the same thing you are by bringing a boat to pcb this year.Have fished the area a lot over the past 25 years but have never brought a boat before.Plan on staying in the bay most of the time but if the water is pretty flat might go out to the bouy you can see from the jetty, don't know what it is called but don't look too far out from the pier in St. Andrews. Not familiar with the pass you are fishing but the pass is rougher than the gulf front at times at St.Andrews.
