A pier regular saw me trying to put together a gold hook rig and showed me a better way to tie it quickly. I'll try to share it:

For new folks, here's a pic of typical components:

Cut a 5' or 6' piece of line and thread on the first hook. Hold the eye in the dominant hand and pull the hook away to make a length of double line:

Hold the line between thumb and first finger of dominant hand. Wrap double line around first two fingers and then hold eye of hook and the line loop between thumb and index finger of dominant hand:

Wrap loop around shank of hook 3 times (like snelling the hook):

Slide the line loops off the hook onto double line above hook eye:

Tighten knot to make dropper loop for hook:

Do two or three more hooks like the first:

Put a surgeon's end loop in both ends of the rig. Loop your weight onto one end. I tie the other loop directly to the fishing line, but loop a swivel on the other end if you wish:

When you're done, it'll look like this:

I hope this illustration isn't too lame. It really ties fast with a little practice. Tying gold hook rigs in a good breeze is an interesting experience. This knot helped make it easier for me.

I think those instructions deserve a sticky. Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures and clear instruction.

I pretty much tie mine the same, but I use surgeon loops for the hooks.

I'll offer one tip that saves me a lot of hooks. Attach the leader material to the main line, slide the hooks onto the line, then attach the sinker. Now you can tie each hook without having to keep track of the other loose hooks. This is especially helpful when the wind is howling.

Thanks, Tiderider, and I like your idea of using the surgeon's loop for the hooks. I think it makes the same knot, although thinking about it strains my abstract reasoning ability. Great tip for saving your hooks, too.
A great tip for newbies using the rig is taught on the party boats. When you reel up, catch the sinker to control the rig. The sinker powers the hooks, and is the key to handling your rig safely.

I'M ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE WHO SPOOL UP A REEL WITH 4 LB FLURORCARBON. I MAKE A VERY SIMPLE RIG - PULL OUT ABOUT 3-4 FT OF LINE, THREAD THREE HOOKS ON THE LINE, TIE ON THE SINKER WITH WHATEVER KNOT YOU LIKE (I USE THE STANDARD FISHERMAN'S KNOT). THE SINKER WILL HOLD YOU LINE TAUGHT. GO TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU WANT THE TOP HOOK. HOLDING THE HOOK IN YOUR RIGHT HAND, MAKE A DOUBLE LOOP AROUND 2 FINGERS. PUT HOOK THROUGH THE LOOP, AND PULL TAUGHT AT THE DISTANCE YOU WANT THE HOOK TO DANGLE OFF THE LINE . I LIKE IT ABOUT 1-1/2 INCHES. REPEAT FOR THE OTHER TWO HOOKS. I LIKE TO LEAVE ABOUT 12 INCHES BETWEEN THE LAST HOOK AND HE SINKER. THIS IS WHAT WORKS BEST FOR ME.

THERE IS A REAL SIMPLE SOLUTION TO THE HOOKS STICKING IN YOU IF YOU PUT THE WEIGHT ON FIRST. JUST PUT A HOOK IN A GUIDE AND I GUARANTEE IT WILL STAY THERE UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO TIE IT ON. I GO UP TO THE TOP HOOK, MEASURE DOWN ABOUT 10-12 INCHES AND STICK THE 2ND HOOK IN A GUIDE, AND REPEAT FOR THE 3RD HOOK. STARTING AT THE TOP, TIE THEM ON. JUST REMEMBER TO KEEP SOME SLACK IN YOUR LINE (SINKER LYING ON SOMETHING AND NOT DANGLING IN THE AIR -

THAT WILL GET YOU HOOKED EVERY TIME

I tie mine exactly like Pat said. Be sure to leave enough space between each hook to avoid major tangles.
