How to wrap a pompano jig

Here's how I do it.  The first thing you'll need is:  pomp jig, preferably pre painted, nylon hair or other skirt material, wrapping thread ( I prefer 00 flat wound nylon thread), a razor blade and a pair of scissors.  I also prefer to use a vice and a thread bobbin.

I clamp up the jig head in the vise and wrap the thread around the jigs collar making sure to overlap to lock the wraps.

You can see how a bobbin and vise makes this much easier.  Now I bunch up the nylon hair and cut it even.

Holding the hair between my thumb and forefinger I evenly push the hair up on the collar then make a couple of tight wraps (the hook end of the collar) to hold it in place.

I then kind of work the hair a bit to make sure it covering the jig collar evenly, then I wrap cleanly up to the jigs head and back down to the hook.  Here I'm adding a pinch of flash.

I then repeat back up to the jigs head and back to the hook.  Now is the slick part where you whip (tie) off the thread.  Simply cut an additional loop of thread and lay it parallel to the collar with the loop facing the jigs head.  Wrap over the whipping loop about 5 or 6 turns.

Then I pinch the wrapping thread against the collar to hold it in place and cut it from the bobbin.  Insert the thread thru the whipping loop and pull the loop back out from under the thread, thus pulling the wrapping thread under itself.

I then pull the thread tight and cut it close with the razor.

Here's how I measure for the jig hair length and then I cut it clean with a pair of sharp scissors.

You can carefully trim off any stray hairs which extend out over the jigs head with a razor.
I use a couple of coats of el cheapo deluxe superglue to seal the threads

Here's the finished product.

I hopes this helps out anyone who ever wished to save lots of bucks making their own jigs.

Thats a great thread Obie
Thanks.
Tiderider

Hey Pat, Thanks. It took about 5 minutes to take the pictures and a half hour to write the thread. lmao
P.Sperry

nice job with the tutorial Obie
T.MASS

Thats how I do it too just without the bobbin. Great job on the pics Obie.

Great post Obie. I don't know how I missed this. Ive tied jigs but didn't know the whipping loop trick. I need to make some molds and get busy. Good stuff!
Tiderider

Thanks, there will be more good stuff coming up in this section so stay tuned.

great post Obie. i might have to try that this winter when i'm board and have nothing to do. thanks for the info
Jigslinger

Hey Obie, where do you get your jig tying materials. I have a cabelas and a bass pro shop here in town but they don't carry the colors I need. I was wondering if you get it locally or order it. Nobody here carries orange.
Tiderider

Here's some places.

Thanks for the sites Obie. Looks like Do-it has what I'm looking for. As far as hooks for cobe jigs, do you use 6/0? I was looking at these: Eagle Claw 635 90630- O'Shaughnessy Jig Hooks
Tiderider

I use regular straight 9/0 Mustads but I have to heat and bend them to fit my molds.
Jigslinger

I was thinkin they looked bigger that 6/0. I haven't heard of jig hooks bigger than 7/0 so I guess I'll have to start bending them too. Thanks again Obie.
Tiderider

GBBT did have some 8/0 and 9/0 jig hooks a few months back, I havn't checked them lately but the next time I stop in I'll check. I'd buy some of the 9/0 jig hooks but I have around 50 straight hooks which should last a while.

Sweet!

DukeDevil91

alright thanks alot man
Tiderider

Like Tyler says you can buy it at GBB&T, but I do have more than I can use if you want to trade.
CLEVE3990

Great description Obie. That is exactly how I make mine.I cut a small piece of the crimped nylon off the larger piece with the amount of hair I need for one series of jigs,(about 1/4"round) . Also, at the Dollar Store you can buy a package of those retractible cutting blades, about 3 or 4 to a pack. You can break off a part when dull with neddle nose pliers and have fresh blades.  Bob

Check out this wrap job!!

PS  Thought you would get a kick out of this. Last year while lifting a Flounder over the rail, the jig pulled out and hit me in the cheek. No way to get out so off to GB ER, Took with my cell phone

Bob, well no one can accuse you of having a dull hook, now can they.  I also am impressed on the way the belly strip stayed on the hook.

haha gotta love the belly strip

how long did it take them to get the hook out of you?
Gino

ouch!!!!  but nice pomp wrap
CLEVE3990

Only took about 30 minutes. When I walked in I told the ER nurse I was new at this facial piercing  and did not like the location of the new piercing I had, She cracked up. Doc deadened it and pushed barb all way through, cut  hook and pulled out. No big deal, I went back to pier and continued fishing.

Boggy Basin Boy

That looks like a new fad bob.The belly strip is a must.

Jigs

I was wondering if you bought your jig heads prepainted, made your own, etc.

By the way, an excellent tutorial ....
Tiderider

First off, Welcome to the forum

I pour my own jigs, file them clean then powder coat the heads.
