King advisory?hey, folks:
I remember that I have read some info from Alabama department of public health fish advisory that people should avoid eating Kings bigger than 36' because of high Hg contamination.
And I have seen that people are so fond of king fishing over piers. So my question is:
1. Did you eat the king fish you caught? regardless of the size/fish advisory?
2.How seriously are you concerned about this advisory?

I won't eat one over 15lbs. We call them mercury sticks in Pcola. As far as eating the big ones though, it would take YEARS of eating them to become a danger to your health. Remember they said similar things about our local mullet, yet people have been eating them for years with no problems.

I don't eat the big ones, and don't let my daughters eat them at all. I do let them all eat spanish. I'm probably in the minority here, but why push the envelope. There are a lot of fish out there with mercury issues, not just kings.

I guess the safety window is quite small here:
the size limit is no less than 24' to keep,by law(AL); and no bigger than 36' to eat, by fish advisory...
quite tricky

The AL "Do Not Consume" Advisory is for king mackerel OVER 39 INCHES
Limited consumption for king mackerel smaller than 39"
http://blog.al.com/pr/2009/07/fishpdf.pdf
FL Dept of Health goes even further
There are a LOT of other fish out there (commonly consumed) with the same health warnings.

To answer your questions:
1. Did you eat the king fish you caught? regardless of the size/fish advisory?
Yes, but not more than twice per month, and I have not caught any over 39" this year
2.How seriously are you concerned about this advisory?
Moderately. Sure there is reason to be concerned, but there are no widespread reports of children being born near the coast with mercury induced abnormalities (are there?)

All this mess with mercury warnings and all that is a bunch of BS.
Yes they do contain mercury. Yes mercury is bad for you.
Are you going to die from it. Maybe if you eat a thermometer everday.
Florida warnings suggest no more than 6oz per month.
They also say you shouldn't drink no more than 16oz of milk a week.
Causes Cancer. Cancer =
I don't eat the larger kings simply they don't taste all that good.
Best suggesting is eat in moderation. Any Palegic fish you eat will contain mercury to some degree.
In there nature.
