King rod suggestion?

Can someone suggest an "off-the-shelf/rack" rod for kings?  Make/model, length, action, etc.
Calvin

They sell these at Half Hitch locally for 59.99

the original pier pest

I recently bought a star rod that was 7 1/2 ft from J and M. It has a cork tape grip and pretty decent casting guides, though they are not your average big king guides. The rod is a graphite blank, but I cannot remember the model number though. After tax and all it cost me 99 bucks.  I really like the action and how light it is. Balances well with my 706 and fights a fish pretty well I must say.

Calvin,

Isn't the sbg9809 69.99 and the sbg9808 59.99

Ron Barwick orders the blanks and makes the Half Hitch custom house rod with those same blanks for $100+ some change.Nice rods.I believe he told me the 809 was a better small bait rod ie cigs, herring, etc.

I have a DBlue med action 9ft spinning rod that works really good. It is a 2pc. The blank is supposed to be a Shimano TC4. I got it on Ebay. I used it hard all summer and it did a good job.

The blank color looks alot like a Teramar.

I'm thinking about this one for Cobia.

If this is the same as the Half Hitch 9' king rod it is not bad, I fished with one yesterday. I'd prefer a little softer tip, but all in all it is OK. If you need a 2 piece Penn makes a 9' you can get at BPS for around $80 or so, it is really better than you'd expect for a rack rod.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I rode over to Navarre today and stopped at the Half Hitch Tackle store.  I picked up the Penn rod Calvin suggested.  I must've missed a sale or something caused it rung up at the register as 69.99.  Still a good buy I thought.  I needed something so I could start and try my hand at the King Macks next season, all of my current rods were either 6', 7', 7'6" or 10".

Told the guy behind the register that they were recommended by you fellows here on ECPF, he said I just missed you Calvin, that you were in there earlier.

Thanks again!

Yeah I was in there buying some live shrimp. See my 10/25/09 report in the inshore section.

Speaking of King Rods

While I was down in Sept I bought more stuff than I should as usual.

I bought on 8 foot rod from Half Hitch that they recommended to throw bait at kings.

It says Custom Built for Half Hitch and has numbers DSP96ML8'0"

Rated 15 to 25 pound test.

On sale for $99. I have no idea except a couple guys on the pier had one and said it was an ok rod.

Anyone know anything about the blanks or quality. I know its a better rod than I am a fisherman but just wondering.

I have that rod too. Between the 2 here is how I would compare them.

Half Hitch Customs DSP96ML8'0" - Rated 15 to 25 pound test.
Penn SBG9809 - Rated 12 to 20 pound test.

Just so you know that Half Hitch rod is made in a 9ft version too with those same specs.

On the 2 rods above, besides the Penn being 1 ft longer, the glaring difference is the line rating. One is a light bait King rod and 1 is a bigger bait King rod. Depending on the pier you fish and what SIZE baits are available it is easy to pick one or the other. For example, if I were fishing Okaloosa where most of the time LY's are the only bait to be had, I would choose the Penn with 12 - 15 pound line. If I were fishing Pcola where most of the time Hardtails are the only bait to be had, I would choose the Half Hitch Custom DSP96ML8'0 with 17 to 20 pound line.

Those rods are decent! The only trouble that I have seen with them is that at any given moment there are about 40 on the pier and the chances of someone walking off with it thinking it is theirs is higher. I had thought of buying one and rewrapping the butt wrap and guides. But I have found it is just cheaper to build one my self. But that Half Hitch rods take some abuse. I have seen people reel up 10 lb. kings with them, no problem.

I was told the current Half Hitch custom rods are built with Penn Pro Guide blanks. I can't remember who told me that but they look like the PGS surf rod I have.

I bought 2 of Half Hitch 9 foot rods I am pleased with them

Thanks for the comments about the Half Hitch Rods. I really wanted the 9 foot rod but trying to get that thing down the elevator and carrying it home in my Envoy was a concern. The tip of the 8 footer was already on the console between me and my wife on the way home.

Probably need to trade that thing for a good two piece rod next trip.

Terry put a rod rack on the top of that Envoy
or buy a hitch rack

They do look like star blanks. Star blanks are alot different then they used to be.

The dude at Half Hitch in PSJ told me today that they are made by Sea Striker for Half Hitch on Star blanks.
