ben, you obviously haven't fished palafox much (or anywhere in the bay) to doubt a 50lb king. the timing isn't likely, but certainly not impossible. i actually had somebody tell me they've been seeing kings up in the bay for almost a month now.

Once they slow down at the pier they usually start showing up in the bay. It'll be on in the next two or three weeks. Big Mack they grow them big in the bay. I've heard of many fish over 40lbs caught and a few over 50. Kay caught a 55 and a 42 on the same day (Sunday) at Palafox Pier last year.

Everyone doubting reports of a 50 pound king being caught in the bay, remember that fish aren't intelligent creatures. They can't read. Therefore they can not read the rule book saying the aren't supposed to be in a certain area.
Biologist and fishermen aren't as smart as they think they are either. Humans can only speculate what the conditions must be to have a presence of a particular fish of a particular size at a certain time and or place. There is nothing to stop these fish from doing what we don't expect them to do.

PALAFOX PIER = BIG KINGSTHERE IS A VERY DEEP CHANNEL IN PENSACOLA BAY WHERE PALAFOX PIER IS LOCATED IT HAS BEEN FAMOUS FOR MANY YEARS FOR HUGE KINGS, SOME OVER 50 LBS. USED TO GO TO THE 17TH ST TRESTLE AND GET MENHADEN (LY'S) AND KEEP ALIVE IN AERATED BUCKET. PUT ONE OUT ON A BALOON AND HANG ON!!!!! IF YOU WERE LUCKY YOU MIGHT CATCH A RIBBON FISH BY THE SEA WALL AND IF YOU DID, HANG ON TO ANYTHING YOU CAN - SMOKER CITY THEY STILL SHOW UP THERE IN AUGUST LIKE THEY DID AT THE FISHING (3 MILE) BRIDGE. TRY YOUR LUCK. NOTHING TO LOSE.
HAPPY HOOKIN'

Brewmaster Mike told me he recently caught a 51 inch king off Palafox pier, the weight was estimated at 40 lbs.

whisker rod dan was out there this morning and this afternoon with what sounded like perfect conditions snobbling a mullet. showers ran him off after only a short while this morning. this afternoon he threw a 10inch mullet til it fell apart. never got a hit. he said the conditions looked great. water visibility was at least 10 feet. east wind. barometric pressure dropping. pretty choppy water. there's probably some fish there, but i'd say they aren't thick yet.
