Lake Powell

I have heard today that a week ago Lake Powell cut a natural pass to the gulf at Camp Helen. The brackish water lake is now draining to the gulf and I am thinking that is where I am going to go fishing this weekend. Who wants to give it a try with me since the pier is closed?

P.M. me and we will work it out. I am not sure of opening time of Camp Helen. If any one knows please let me know.
jewfish

I'm in.
robertyb

I'm in if you will pick me up on the way. Just a 625 mile detour.
Garb

I'm in.
blaminack

Nice! I will try to find out the opening time tomorrow and try to get get bait friday night or early sat. I am thinking finger mullet and bull minnows are called for.
jewfish

Yaks?
blaminack

Ewww... depends on the weather FOR SURE, but I am liking how you are thinking on this one.
jewfish

I've fished Lake Powell on foot, not fun. Would be much better with a yak, especially since Brad is hooking us up.
hijacker3

I'm in. Well since its my dad's idea, so thats the only way to fish anyway.
jewfish

Well, it's not quite "Googans At Sea" but I'm gonna need some extra people to help clean all my fish.
hijacker3

OOOOOOOOH! get cocky manny! Come saturday, we'll see how that works for you.
hijacker3

All Brad's yaks are booked this weekend. We could just walk this time.
jewfish

Maybe someone can come through with a boat. I'm gonna tell you this now, it's a long walk and I hope you like wading.
Garb

I love wading

Manny,

If ya scared say your scared....
hijacker3

Long walk from where? My dad wants to hit the beach and walk straight to that pass.
Garb

They open at 8am and it is 4.00 per car to get in
jewfish

I ain't skeered, I'm just saying. Oh, now I have to go buy my fishing license too, it just expired.
Garb

lol

Excuses....

You scared
jewfish

I'll be there, I might just borrow Ernie's yak and laugh at you shorebound googans.
Garb

hmmm could get my Aunts Wave Runners
jewfish

It sucks for wade fishing, just saying. We'd be much better off with something that would allow us to get out a hundred yards from shore.
blaminack

My idea was to get into Camp Helen and walk down the beach to the pass that has been cut and fish the outflow and the shallows of the beach around it. Is it a long walk from a parking area? I have been inside Camp Helen, at least as far as I can remember. Surely it would be bad walking from the hard packed sand of the beach dragging a pier cart? Would it? Seems doable to me.
Garb

Manny is scared.

He don't to work for his catch.

He wants it given to him....LOL
jewfish

Seeing as how I give away 99% of my catch normally, why not?

From the parking lot, I wouldn't recommend dragging a cart. Look at it on Google Earth. I have fished there before and the area close to shore is shallow and unless you're dead set on wading, I don't see it as being a fun time. If you do want to do it, I suggest traveling light and carrying artificials.
Garb

Manny,

I believe Bill is talking gulf side.

For Flounder and so forth.
jewfish

Oh gulfside, ehhhh, ok. That makes more sense. I'm not bringing my shopping cart though.
Ernie & Linda

Theres an access road straight to the cut or just west of it on helen. Its soft sand though. If we dont go yall can borrow our cart, Its got the wide tires.     You can take a yak too. Never launched there, pullin it down that steep hill will be a cinch. bringing it back up    The reds should be on them old pylons big time.
yak a Mac

Y'all are killing me - wish I was back down there. This sounds like a great trip in the yak.

I'll be sitting on the edge of my seat for the report.

East side of Phillips Inlet Bridge, there is a sand road on the left, follow to the inlet and easy launch in and out.Wading has produced several trout over the 8lb. mark btw.Reds and flounder should be thick outside the mouth.
blaminack

Hmmm didn't know about a sand road... is it two wheel drive accessible? If so that would make it so that we could get out there early!
jewfish

And not have to pay park admission. I just looked at it on GoogleEarth and I think it looks better for fishing than the other side. Howard, any recommendations on lures?

In the slim chance someone picks you up I'm only 40 more miles down the road in Marietta. I will buy everyones breakfast at the Waffle House.

Just in case no one shows I'm going bassfishing on Lanier as a backup.
jewfish

Just got back from the inlet, it's open and fish are there. Hope y'all like bluefish, this is one of about a dozen I caught. They ranged from 14-22 inches and destroyed anything you put in front of them.

Did see one nice flounder caught but unless you're throwing weedless, expect to spend most of your time pulling grass and other crap off your lures.
QWERTY

Pretty sure Camp Helen opens @ 8am.  I fish that area from time to time.  I seem to catch more fish when the pass is closed.  I love to fish there just after the pass closes after having been open.  Keep us updated on what you catch.
weagle

Are yall fishing out on the beach/surf or back in the inlet?

Weagle
QWERTY

Surf just west of Camp Helen.  Lots of blues & sharks from the surf @ night.
jewfish

I was fishing between the inlet outlet and the remnants of the old pier.
blaminack

Hmmmm.... is it worth it though?
jewfish

Not if the pier is open or if you have access to a kayak, or if you are really, really desperate to catch bluefish.
QWERTY

Love to catch whatever.  A blue fish is a pretty good fight.  Also pretty funny to watch tourits lip a blue as it's a bass & feel how strong their jaws are.  LOL
blaminack

OK Guys well it looks like we will be at the pier bright and early.

Dark and early usually works better Bill. Catch a big King for me. They start about 5:45 AM.
QWERTY

Let me know what you catch
