new toyI have been wanting to try to make a pier gaff for some time. found a place to get stainless steel rod and this is my first try. Its made of 3/8 ss and wieghs about 8 lbs. Just wanted some input for version 2. I was in a hurry with the welding. I'll do better on the next one.
I hope the photo shows up. may need help with it. (fixed it for you, Obie)

PIER GAFFLOOKS GOOD BUT WILL NEED LEAD ON THE SHAFT TO KEEP STABLE IN THE WATER WHEN IT IS ROUGH. SOMEONE MORE EXPERIENCED THAN ME IN BUILDING GAFFS WILL BE ABLE TO TELL YOU THE APPROXIMATE AMOUNT. WILL BE GLAD TO SHOW YOU THE ONE I GOT FROM OKALOOSA ISLAND PIER.

Looks good. Alot like the one I made. It looks like you sharpened it after putting it together. I sharpened mine before I bent the prongs making it easier to do.
Make sure its sharp and then sharpen it a little more. A bigger diameter rope helps with a heavy fish.

If it weighs 8 lbs would it still need lead? And, I recently lost mine so pm me if you're interested in selling one.

I agree with the larger rope comment. I have a larger diameter rope that is a little bit longer than normal. P.S. Watch your hand when removing the gaff from a king or this could happen to you. I know it happenned to me last weekend.

I live (unfortunately) in Montgomery my self. I am assuming this is at BMC or GCMC in PCB, but.... what happened? looks like the gaff went through your knuckle, i doubt a king did that with its mouth....

I was removing my gaff from about a 20# king that I had head shot. I slammed the king on the deck with the gaff still in it, so I assumed it was dead. Well I was wrong. I grabbed a hold of the shank and when I went to remove the gaff it jurked its head an cut my finger all the way to the bone severing the tendon. I got my revenge at about 6 o'clock with a baseball bat. If you go to gulf shores portion of the forum and click on king attack you can see all the pictures.

Thanks for the comments. I'll add a couple lbs. of lead for good measure.
Got 2 more ss rods today to build a couple more.
Practice makes perfect!
What would the ideal wieght be?
These will make good christmas gifts :)
As for the Finger... OUCH!
Hope it heals quickly.

I changed to a 5/8 rope. It should be easer in the hands.
