Some of you may have already heard this (I just found out this weekend) but there are plans to put a lifeguard station on the pier. Not sure how they'll get it up there, but they have holes already drilled. The station is near the sheriff's substation in the parking lot. A lot of rumors on what kind of rules they'll enforce (lightning, etc...), but they are just rumors. If anyone knows anything just post up.
BTW, this is just one of the most wonderful plans in the world

I do not agree with this decision. This reminds me in ways of a similar situation but slightly different - the proposal they have going on at Pcola pier, see HERE. In particular what I'm worried about is the lifeguards coming up on the pier and making the decisions and enforcing the rules that directly effect the fishermen fishing from a whole length pier they paid to fish on. Compare and contrast the info & incidents in that Pcola pier proposal to the potentials of this. Not good.

Consider organizing. The dogs on the beach people are organized. Take a look from the Russell-Fields Pier and you can see the dog beach. Individuals are ignored. Organizations are listened to. Or, someday you could see a sign: "No Fishing From Pier".

This is an email response I got from 'Tommy T.' at OIP. It's reassuring regarding the fear that lifeguards will interfere with fishing from the OIP because of the presence of swimmers:

Thank you for your comments. I can address a couple of issues.
First there is a county ordnance prohibiting any fishing, surfing,
swimming, boating, etc. within 150 feet of this pier. We call the
sheriffs office whenever someone complains.
Second, the county owns this facility and they have the authority to
take this action.

wow... The county is just being

right now because:

1. Bathers complain that we fish in "their area" (pompano hold to be exact).
2. The county gets pissy because so many people think that #1 is true (WTF?!).
3. The bathers have formed a committee against us and plan to take over the pier, push it over, and swim there, because we're in their way of their "swimming" (standing in saltwater) where hooks are flying.

Just a theory though...

they already have the base and the tower out on the pier, but its not put up yet unless they did it today while i was at work. its gonna be a big cluster

, but i guess there's not much we can do about it. it will make a nice cobia tower in april though. got a feeling it will be a popular place for graffiti to. we'll see what happens. hopefully it wont be as bad as we think, but im not counting on it.

It's amazing all the crap they decide they need on piers, Life guard towers, weather stations, jetski buoys whats next a Lighthouse?

I think they are going to start doing wet teeshirt contests in the evenings to try and get more walkons. Think it will work?

I guess my question is why is it going to be about half way down and in the middle of the pier?VERY FEW AND I MEAN VERY FEW swimmers go out this far and you usually notice their girly screams(yeah, they're usually guys) when they see flippers fin and scream SHARK!!!
