Old school Fenwick

This is a new old stock Fenwick SP965 blank (8ft)  I put together yesterday evening.  Used some old Mildrum guides and a Fuji plate seat, that's an old Roddy Rod butt cap.  It should sling a light bait like a cig or ly pretty good.  The tip is not at all flimsy and it really starts getting firm around the third guide.  I can't wait to put it to the test.

I also decided to rewrap my old Gator T90L, what do you think.

Nice work Obie. I might have to buy a rod from you one day.
Tiderider

Thanks Robert, I can make you good one for sure.
Rick

Hey Obie, is that the Fenwick blank that was on ebay? How heavy is that blank?
Rick

Also would a 22 reel seat fit on the blank?

Hey Rick it is the one on ebay.  The blank is light as a feather and the action is quite similar to a 596 Gator but not as slow.  I'm pretty sure a 22 reelseat would fit but didn't have one to try.  The rod has a 1 inch butt and a size 7.5 tip, really fast taper but not a seriously fast action.

I just ordered one from the same guy. I think what I am getting is the
SP 967. Your rod looks great....bama colors...roll tide.
jaceboat

That's a great action, you're going to love it.
Thanks Jace it's a keeper.

Yeah man!!! I really like the minimalist approach. Hopefully I will be able to get my similar rod on the pier tomorrow. Finally!

I looked at that blank on Ebay as well.  Seriously considered it actually.  Nice looking rod!  Do you have any experience using the plate type reel seat without a grip?  If so, have you ever had any issues (moving, too much pressure causing finish to crack, etc.) when the seat is not placed over a grip?  I like the concept and may try it in the future.

I have a plate seat over seiners twine. I may redo that part to put down cork tape though.

I've done plates over the blank, under wrapped thread, cork and cork tape and have yet to have any problems.  Eventually the finish over the plate wraps are not going to look so pretty.  I have a plate seat directly on a 60lb class Calstar that has caught several sharks and it's solid as a rock.  Putting it over cork and cork tape can be tricky as the thread will want to dig into both those soft materials.

Good to know.  Was just curious if there might be extra stress (similar to guides placed directly onto a blank) on the finish/blank with nothing between blank and seat.  I have built and still use two surf rods that have a plate type seat over cork tape.  One seat is wrapped/coated, the other is taped (use this rod time to time for pier fishing too).  Have yet to have a problem with either.  Just may try wrapping a plate type seat directly to a blank now.  Thanks!  Like the colors on that Gator also....sharp.

I would suggest mocking up your rod first, taping the reel to the rod without a grip and make sure it feels good to the hand.  I know my eyes like the look of that style reel seat.  My long thin hands feel more comfortable gripping a nice fat grip.

I wrapped an ultra-lite directly to a straight cork grip with 50 pound mono and even it wanted to dig in somewhat.

Great looking rods Obie. Was going to try to buy one of the ones you sold earlier this year till I found out I was going to get laid off later this year. If I am still around may still try to get one.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I make it a practice to test any rod I build several times before I wrap/coat anything.   Not my first rodeo.  It definitely would be a different feeling sans grip...more sensitivity I would imagine not to mention less total weight to the finished rod.  If the diameter of the blank is large enough and the feel is comfortable enough without grip material under the reel seat, then the two benefits mentioned may well be worth it.

obie, i'm curious about that blank... are there any more available from that guy on ebay? or was it a lucky find... i looked and couldn't find one by searching "sb965" but didn't search any other similar names. just curious.
Rick

PM me and I'll give you his contact info. I just ordered a 967 from him. He might have a 966.
