Penn 7500ss Drag Problems

Just bought a used Penn 7500ss that looks to be in excellent shape. However, the drag is loose unless you tighten all the way down and then it is jerky and still to loose.

The drag appears to have been left tightened down for a long time.

Do I need to replace the teflon drag washer or is there anything else to do to get it smooth.

Thanks.

Get a Shimano.

no take the drag out of the spool all the way down and take an old tooth brush clean the spool up good with some dawn soap and water dry the drag cavity out good and spray a very thin coat of wd on it then clean all the drag washers up good  put the stop sign  washer down first then a white teflon washer with a very thin coat of grease ,just enough to make it slippery, then a round washer then a fiber washer then another spot sign washer then fiber then round then the c-ring to hold it all in place agin . Then look at your drag knob make sure its not cracked or broken  put a few drops of wd inside it on the spring make sure the surface that contacts drag washers is flat and smooth and make sure it contacts the whole surface  if its not the right drag knob it will cause problems also if its not going down into the drag cavity correctly

The Penn 7500SS is a fine reel. Manny does no appreciate good reels.

I sent you a PM to view another site. Hope it solves your problem, I am sure it will.

LOL.

We posted at same time. I sent him to the schematics page for the 7500SS at Penn Parts so he can get the drag back right.

Well, the mechanical genius finally fixed the thing.

Trying to put the spool back on the spool shaft on this particular reel takes about 5 minutes of twisting, moving, and trying to get it just right.

It will finally go on the shaft and then another little twist it goes on a little more.

I have a Penn 4500ss and a Penn 5500ss and never had this much problem placing the spool back on.

The 7500 is working fine now and the fricken thing will have to freeze completely before I take that spool off again.

Thanks for everyones advice and I do use all Shimano's for freshwater baitcasters.

glad to hear that yea once you take it apart you haver got to re align the washers in the drag so twisting and pushing is the ticket lol well that whats she said

I would pull those drag washers out and clean them good and put them back in before I would even think of fishing that reel. A big fish can lock down a dirty drag stack in a second.

Every used Penn I buy gets broke down and worked over before being fished. I got about a lb. of sand out of a 704Z I bought recently that was "lightly fished". Beautiful reel but full of sand. It is good as new now.

And most Penns are hard to seat. Very common. Van Staals are bad about it also.

If it were me I would buy a new set of drag washers. They are a CHEAP little bit of insurance.

It has to seat properly on the shaft or won't work right, looks like you figured that out. A good cleaing wouldn't hurt either, I use the Penn grease, it's good stuff. I've caught a crapload of kings on 7500SS's. It is a good reel if you treat it right.

I had one for about 7 years and I caught pile of fish on mine and got spooled once by Ray that was about 6-7 feet across that took off like his tail was on fire when I accidently hung a gotcha in his wing when he came from under my boat. It was just a tough reel and I would love to have another one.

Thanks,

A man on the pier that repairs reels looked at mine and said my washers are inststalled in the wrong order. That is probably why I am having some much trouble getting the spool to go back on.

Thank you for the correct alignment and cleaning info.
