Pics of homemade carts...

If you have some pics of homemade carts you've made please post them. Just looking for some ideas. Most likely going to start with a handtruck, but I'm thinking of adding a box w/ some rod holders and some racks, switching out the axle and wheels, and adding a fold out cutting board. I'd appreciate any idea's you guys have. Got to keep it somewhat light and  portable though. Trying to find a light handtruck that's easier to haul around to the beach and pier. Thanks guys in advance.
blaminack

Light isn't exactly what you will have with most of the hand trucks because the non-commercial ones will be made of steel. The good ones like I use at work are REALLY high and for the price you could get a couple real pier carts. I had one made from a garden cart, but that thing was bulky and heavy.
jewfish

I should get one of those "Hover-rounds" and install rod holders.
blaminack

I saw one of the older regulars hauling his pier cart and a chick off the pier all the way to the truck with his today. Like a little Cho Cho..
jewfish

Yup, seen them many times.

Collapsable Dolly, 5 gallon bucket, and 2 in PVC Pipe. Bungee in Place. $60

Nice. I had looked at some of those, but wasn't sure how sturdy it would be. Still be handy to have though.

Ya was kind of realizing that, the rolleez people have kind of a hand dolly for $99 that I was considering using. Or maybe even making kind of a pvc hand truck. Considered making it where I could lean it over on the sand and add kind of a sled piece so it would pull on top of the sand but I don't know.
FishAddict

I just took a stock Igloo wheeled cooler and added 3 rod holders to the front side of it. Works OK, but you have to cut a decent king and fold it in half to get it in. It's not fancy or permanent, but gets the job done, and doesn't take up a lot of space in the garage.
REEFDUP

PVC , 5/8 steel rod ,two never flat tires ($25 each) some type of caster for front end ,nuts and bolts for  the rod holders , some type of flooring, doesnt have to be much ,hell you dont have to even glue it together (might want to change it later). If youve been to GSP much youve seen mine works great, a lot wider than the aluminum ones you buy. The only problem i had was comin up w/ a good idea for a handle so i made one out of left over pvc.
T-Boy

The best cart I have is a garden cart I bought from Home Depot for $100.

I used electrical ties to place rod holders made out of 2 inch PVC where I wanted them. About $115 invested but I didn't get anything on sale. I paid $99 for the cart and I have seen them for $69 here in Atlanta.

I pulled it everyday from the Calypso to the pier and back with not much trouble.

However, it isn't all that portable if you do not have a truck.
robertyb

When my tires went on my cooler cart I went to Ace Hardware and bought one of these to use. Works well and folds flat to go in my Honda trunk.

FishinDon

Fish Addict and Bob. We are bound to have some cosmic connection. Having to drive from LA with a family, my hauling space is always liimited. I took a wheelie cool cooler, cut a 14 inch piece of one by, some screws and some inch and a half pvc, some bungies for the tackle box and rocket launchers and made a pretty workable pier cart. I agree for a big king you have to be resourceful, but it cheap, portable, and it will do the job. I would send some pics but I am kinda rushed right now. Don
hoochfisher

Here is one I made of PVC. Works pretty well. Not thrilled with the handle situation. Needs something stiffer. It is not all glued so it will take down for travel. It could be made to fit a larger cooler or whatever else you have.

PIER CARTS

I PICKED UP A NEW ONE MY BROTHER  CHARLES, WHO IS LEARING TO PIER FISH AT GSH PIER, MADE FROM HEAVY DUTY ALUMINUM  I WILL GET HIM TO POST A PICTURE ON THE WEB SITE WITH  HIS PHONE NUMBER.   THIS ONE WILL HOLD A 120-150 QT IGLOO COOLER AND HAS 6 ROD HOLDERS PLUS TWO SHELVES FOR TACKLE BOX, ETC.  I WILL TRY IT OUT TOMORROW AT OIP.  HE TOLD ME THAT HE WILL CUSTOM MAKE ONE FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS ONE.  THE FILIP SIDE TO THIS,  THIS IS A TWO IN ONE CART. HE MADE THE ORIGINAL ONE TO HAUL DEER OUT OF THE WOODS, THAT IT WOULD GO OVER LOGS AND THRU BRUSH BETTER THAN ANYTHING HE HAD EVER USED BEFORE.  HE IS ONE OF THOSE GUYS THAT CAN BUILD ANYTHING OUT OF METAL.

Maybe other Ace Hardware stores have them marked down?
robertyb

The $199.00 price is for two. Regular retail is $100.00 each. You can find them cheaper by looking.

If anyone is interested in buying one there is one on e-bay

With the shipping it is cheaper at Ace Hardware including the tax at full retail price.
ToferLee

Thanks for posting guys. Got a crate for free from some friends yesterday that I attached some pvc rod holders to and tossed on my el cheapo cart from walmart for now. I'm pretty close to the bottom breaking and wheels falling off of that thing though lol. Anybody tried out that folding cart from wheeleez though? There selling it for $99 or they also have a few different ones on amazon for less than $100. Getting one to work on the pier isn't too hard, on the beach is a whole lot tougher though. Garb was saying he could build one a lot like the Fishnmate carts but I wonder how tough it would be to haul around.
blaminack

His is very nice. If he didn't tell you that he made it, it would pass off as production almost. His would be the same to get around as all of the premade ones. UNLESS he came up with a brilliant idea to make them collapsable!
Garb

Bill

As you mentioned that I am working on that.
Kingfshr

Garb the enturapenuer (sp).
ToferLee

Ditto, on the collapsable feature. Sure would be nice on a big cart. Theres a place on the expressway over here towards foley thats selling some modified versions of the fishing carts adding pop off wheeleez wheels and what not but they were $300-$400. Ouch, they also had one that was collapsable though. Kind of an industrial supply store.

1. One Roll behind Igloo Cooler $25.00

2. Four bass pro boat type rod holder $12.00

3. One bag of 3 1/2" stainless steel screws & nuts  $5.00

4. One small tube of silicone $2.00

5. Cup holders on top to put your beer while fishing  $ priceless

$44 dollars total and works like a charm for us guys that have to travel to get there and don't get to fish that much.

Alright

I should have the prototype cart done tonight or tomorrow morning.
It will be able to be broken down to about 4 or 6  inchs thick with the wheels off and 10" with the wheels on.

FishAddict

What I did was a lot like B Tuckers except I have an Igloo Cube with 3 holders (King, smaller, and bait). I used PVC pipe, nylon hardware not stainless, and siliconed in a little foam to keep the smaller bait rod tight. Put a larger holder in the center for king rod. It came out quite sturdy and works good for me, I guess no pics are really needed now.
Garb

The only issue with PVC is the glue it is not designed to handle the torque from the weight and bouncing and will give way. I know this from experience.
REEFDUP

I dont have an issue with pvc , i didnt glue it  and i make  4 or 5 trips down GSP at least every week ,as i said in my earlier post ,if you dont glue it then you can change it  later if you want.Or screw it together at the joints if need be, Dont get discourged   ADAPT  OVERCOME
Garb

Reef

I was not knocking your cart or pvc.
I just made a true statement.
But know that you mentioned it if you look closely at your cart pictured you will see that it starting to sagg in the middle.
If you don't have it glued how do you keep it together. Just asking
REEFDUP

Its been saggin since the day i built it.
jon tolar

Wood layin in the gargae - $0
Screws - $0
wheels - $0
pvc - $0

i built this one out of materials i had layin around. this was supposed to be a prototype but i liked it so much i actually use it.

REEFDUP

I hav'nt had any trouble keepin it together , if I do ill figure somethin out, but i have trouble tryin to get some peices back apart w/out glue. Its a work in progress , If you look at it from the top you'd see its not square either , it was an 8 hr. project. None of my peices are the same length, I tested on a buddy of mines vert ramp, even w/my 220lbs. in it (which i do not suggest tryin) no steerring, no brakes  and no first -aid kit bummer.

Looks good. The only suggestion I have is weld a small piece of aluminum on the bottom of the rod holders so the butts of your rods won't drag on the deck.
Garb

I have alum bar for that. Just didn't add it yet
Garb

Ok from seeing all the prices of what it to takes to modify dollies, garden carts, and even PVC carts to make a sutable fishing cart. Here are my prices.

Fish N Mate Jr
$174.95 Website Plus Shipping
9x14.5x34
4 Rod Holders

Mine
$145
9x15.5x31
6 Rod Holders
----------------------------------------

Fish N Mate Sr $209.99 Plus Shipping
9x16x43
8 Rod Holders

Mine $185.00
9x16x42
8 Rod Holders
--------------------------------------

To make any cart collapsible 30.00 more

Would give you Fish N Mates price but they don't make one.....

Note** Had to modify some of the length due to Patent Rights..

All cart are made out of 6063 T-6 Aircraft aluminum. They can hold approx. 200lbs but I will tell ya this. I have stood on mine and I am 200+ some....
Kingfshr

I knew Garb would come up with something good. There's alot of potential in that design. Copy Right itor patent it quick.  LOL
Garb

It is in the process...
Filled out all paperwork last night for a Patent and it has been submitted already.
Dumb Axe

Make the front with a t that slides in and out with a pin to hold it in place and then have a swivel wheel option for the front. Yes i am looking at it from a lazy mans point of view. Why lift if all you have to do is pull.
Garb

I understand.

I have looking into a cost effective wheel that will last a while instead of blowing out.

nice rig but i'm cornfused  if all you had to do was adjust a couple of lengths to avoid patent infringements, what's to stop somebody else from doing the same thing to your design?  sounds like a waste of 5 grand for a patent that could easily be sideskirted.

In order to get a patent it has to be approved by the Patent Department.
It maybe a situation where there is no Patent needed.
And then it is your choice as to if you purchase te patent.

And the last time I check the Patent cost is only about $2000
Filing fee $100
Blue Prints $125
Patent Article $1800

Reef, if your cart starts sagging too much, you can put 1-2 inch (depending on your pvc's inside diameter) wooden dowel rods in the base of the frame the length of the cart to give it more support; these wouldn't add too much weight and would keep it from possibly breaking in the middle.
FinChaser

Don't laugh, but here's mine:
Base vehicle  is a foldihg Travel Chair $99.95 on-line new. I got mine used for next to nothin

Finished product:

All you need is the chair, a couple of dairy crates, some 2" pvc, velcro straps, sheet metal screws and a lot of imagimation.
This baby has 7 rod holders (not counting the ones on cooler), 2 five gal. buckets (one for dry storage and one with aereator for bait), tackle box in the seat and a 86qt. Igloo on the armrests. There are hooks for hanging a gaff and other items. Load capacity is 300lbs.  It's all based on a combination of velcro and gravity.
Caution - It rolls easly, so be sure to set the brakes on a windy day or it will drive off on its own.
REEFDUP

Damn Finchaser, you told me you would steal your wifes wheelchair to go fishin if you had to, I didnt know you were serious . Thats hardcore !
REEFDUP

Thanks Cotton , thats a good idea , I had also thought about movin my front wheel back more to give more support in the middle of the span .
cotton

where's the wheelchair? All I can see is a huge pile of fishing stuff! Now THAT's what I call homemade! pretty bad, though stealin' your wife's chair...
REEFDUP

I'm with you cotton , I never knew it was awheelchair til sat, when someone at the pier told me, no wonder we never see his wife

Hey Reefdup,
Maybe if you mixed up some viagra in water and pour it in your pipes, it might help that sagging problem you have!
REEFDUP

Would'nt want to waste any viagra on a pier cart, gonna need it one day.
Jhurley27

Mine is a blue ice cube cooler and my tackle box handle slides over it, gaff goes in cooler, and drinks hang over tackle box. Only need a hand for poles, I limit myself to 2.
racerock56

Folds up and can fit nicely on a roof rack or in a trunk ...

FishAddict

OK this is my first run at posting a picture here. Here is my cart. I slip my tackle bag over the handle, have a slot for each rod. If you travel you can put stuff in it so it doesn't take up a lot of extra space if you're tight. Granted it is not going to last 5 yrs, but it works OK, you do have to fold up kings to get them in. Hardware is nylon, no rust. Length of the holders is just right so the rod slides into the tube and the reel arm rests in the notch on the tube. They are positioned where the reels are angled so they don't bump. Note the foam in the one, that keeps the bait rod snug amd not flopping around.

Question for tech experts:  I reinforced T-wagon with zinc-coated washers.  Later, I found washers heavily corroded, but no corrosion anywhere else.  Would a sacrificial anode be a good idea for steel pier carts and equipment?
Garb

T-Wagon

I would suggest if you use any other than stainless use a galvinized coating not zinc.
Garb

All right here is the finally product that I will start production on.

33" long
18" wide
9" Tall

This cart is completely collapsible. Will fit in most cars.

I will be also making the non collapsible version of this one as well.

PM me for qoutes. They are cheaper than Fish N Mate and made out higher quality aluminum.

Get your choice of color Black, Aluminum, Green, Blue. Other colors maybe available just ask.
pierbird

Damn nice work on the cart
If I didn't already have one I buy one of yours
Calvin

This is Ms Pat's new pier cart, the Cadillac on wheels.    She showed it to me when I visited her today. I liked it so much I had to take some pics of it and contribute to this thread. This truly is the best pier cart I have ever seen.    It is surprisingly very light with solid construction. Thats one of those big coolers that will hold atleast a 50 pound Cobia. Ms Pat's brother made the cart and he did a fine job.

Click the pics for bigger version.

I especially like the nose wheel.  One doesn't have to lift the end, which can get old, like we all tend to do.

Garb's cart is nice for the minimalist   I like Ms. Pat's cause it has enough room for all my junk that I have to carry especially when I'm deckhanding for the family

But these carts are way to professional looking to be "home-made"... where's all the junked up redneck stuff (like mine)?

Blue Cart

T-wagon

Looking at these carts, I recalled the racks on the beach vehicles on the Outer Banks.  It occurred to me a cart might be designed with a trailer hitch attachment in its frame, and ride around on the back of a vehicle.  Just lift it up and attach it to the trailer hitch.  Not the easiest thing to make work, but possible.
Garb

Hey T,

They already have one designed by Fish N Mate.

It locks in the axle and the front clip of the cart.
