Pits on Spool LipI picked up a 650SS a few months ago, and it has a couple of "pits" on the lip of the spool where the line will rub as it is casted. Anyone have any ideas on what to do with this other than replacing the spool or trying to polish it off? It has a very nice finish other than the 2 pits on it. Thanks

I think I would buff it out with scotch brite a little and then fill it in with some sort of epoxy. It may not work but it would be something easy to try.

I would just feather out the chips with the finest sandpaper that will do the job and leave it at that.

the newer china penns sure seem to be a let down

 made in china..... i wouldnt spend a dime on a reel made in china even if it is a penn. what about the new torque series from penn ? too EXPENSIVE in my opinion. i dont understand this need for sealed reels i wash mine out with fresh water after every use and have virtually no corrosion probs but then again my reels never get submerged and if for some reason they do i just rinse them thoroughly . im not so lazy that i gotta spend 600$ on a reel so it will last

I'll second this notion except, the leave it at that part. When you sand out the pits and feather it you will be removing the anodized surface in the area.
The anodize is what is supped to protect the aluminum from pits or corrosion, So take extra care to clean the reel after every use or you will wind up feathering down even more pits.

The 6500ss reels were made in the USA. Penn didn't make the ss series in China until the third generation of the reel, such as the 550ssg and 650ssm. I am not certain of the ssm, but i know for certain some of the first of the ssg reels were made here. I know because I own a 440ssg and a 550ssg, both of which have MADE IN USA on the upperside of the reel foot.

Yes this is an older 650, US made. I think the previous owner may have hit something rather than these being corrosion pits. The reason I asked about this is because I was concened about the corrosion if I just smoothed it off. I guess I'm too worried about nothing. Thanks,

wouldn't hurt to put some paste wax on it after buffing out the nick.

you could also hit it with some automotive clear coat after buffing out the pits , just take scotch brite and scuff over the entire spool to give the clear something to stick to . ive never done this to a spool but do it all the time to aluminum parts and it works fine you may have to re clear it once in a while but it should help to protect it. they sell clear coat in spray cans at any automotive store just be sure to scuff thoroughly before applying. oh yeah and clean spool with paint thinner or some solvent to remove any oils or contaminates after scuffing, the oil that comes off your fingers while scuffing and handling is enough to screw up the clear . i hang parts on clothes hangers to paint would work good on a spool too just un bend hanger and insert through hole hang and clear. just a suggestion good luck
