Refinishing Old Reels

I have been thinking about putting a new finish on an old 302. Any help on surface prep, primer type, paint type, and if clearcoat is a good idea or not (and if it is a good idea what type) would be appreciated. Was thinking about doing it as a winter project and want to start thinking about what I want to do and how. Looking forward to learning how to do this. Thanks in advance for any help and ideas.

I was thinking of getting with one of my buddies that has an auto body shop and see what he would charge if he did it. I have seen some crappy home paint jobs that don't look good.

fellas, i started this 706 as a strip and paint. but as i was stripping with what i read to be some of the best aircraft stripper on the market, there was still going to be alot of handsanding and scrapping. i found a buddy that does the powder coat on the side in his garage. there are few around here that do it out of thier house. the reel had a bit of pitting on the side plate but i left it that way, unless you get on it you can't tell. it is not a show piece. cadman sent me one to have done he liked so much and he saw the reel in person. i know i am going to have at least 2 more of mine done. all i do is break it down, he bead blast it and coats it....

Steve do you have a name brand for the Aircraft Stripper? I have a Mitchell 303 that I am working on. So far I have the spool stripped by hand. I have also built a stainless side plate to get rid of the grease port. It would be SO SICK to get a whole reel anodized. I wonder if that is a reasonable possibility?

Please let us know how the powder coating holds up. I have thought of it, but have been a bit leary due to chipping potential.

don't remeber the name.i had a friend get the stripper and used it all on 1 reel that i did not finish. regardless of how you finish the reel, i would recommend to find someone to bead/sand blast it and be done with it. as far as anodizing a complete reel, i looked into that and i do not remeber the exact amount but it was not reasonably priced. i read on powder coating before i did it and found it was durable and flexable and should hold up as well as paint. i have only had 2 outings with my reel with no problems, and i do not baby my stuff. i take care of it but do not baby it.

What does he charge to rework the reel as you described?

I am now thinking of sandblasting mine and clear coating it. I saw a 706 done this way and it was very eye catching.

he charges 40 bucks to bead blast and powder coat your parts. you must take it all apart., if you have any pitting i recommend you sanding and buffing that part yourself as his time is limited. the job he done on mine was money well spent. if you have a nice reel i would leave it nice, but if you have a beater it does wonders. powder coat will not hide any inperfections in the body but when it is pretty it is less noticeable
