9/12 am reportWel-l-l-l-l-l, it was pretty crazy for awhile I got there late(after six) walked out first and saw no less then eight already on the deck, some very good sized. Went and got my gear and well you know five minutes too late. Fish were caught fairly steady with a STUD spanish run between eight and nine thirty.Almost all fish were caught on cigarsicles although threadfin were abundant.I'm sure some were caught on other baits including a keeper king on a gotcha.Wind steady out of the east with squalls blowing in and out(rain gear?...I don't need no stinking rain gear but it woud have been nice to have some) Flipper present but not too bad even if he got me twice.Keeper remoras everywhere. My tally: one remora, one seagull and two dolphins(flipster) and off by 0940. Well the sun just came out,so get em folks, I've got a long day of football ahead.Go Green!!!!

Got there around 7. First cast king on (little one). 3rd cast a nice king eats, probably 15+ and does nothing. No run, just shaking it's head. I set the hook a few more times to get it to fire up. No go. That fish decided to run west when I got to the east side of the pier. Needless to say it made me look like a googan, a willie, a touro, a gooch. Stoopid fish. The next 2 baits got mauled and my final bait was ignored. Only a few caught after that. Left by 8:30 to go get my daughter.

I was there before daylight. Right at daylight, there was a good flurry of kings that lasted for about an hour. Some stud Spanish were being caught also. I may start leaving my gaff at home. The whole time the flurry was going on, I was stuck on gaff duty. Must have gaffed a dozen of them myself. I just never have been able to leave a guy bent over the rail with a King ready to gaff without giving him or her a hand. It's a little thing I call good sportsmanship. I will admit, it is very hard to lay your rig down when the Kings are on a feeding frenzy so you can go gaff a fish for someone. I was missing all the action myself.
When the feeding frenzy was dying down and nobody had a King ready to gaff, I picked up my brand new, still cherry, Spanish rig and flung out a 2 oz. Gotcha. (you didn't hear me say that). Watched a decent King slam the Gotcha but he missed the hooks. I kept jigging the Gotcha and when it was under my feet the King slammed it again not five feet from the pier. This time he got the hooks and the show was on.
Now this is the bad part. When I had the King ready to gaff, I yelled for a gaff several times. After all the Kings I had gaffed during the feeding frenzy, not getting one myself because I was gaffing for others, no one responded. Nothing. Nobody. Not because they didn't hear, because I was yelling loud enough for people on the beach to hear me. Nobody was willing to lay their rig down and gaff a fish for somebody else.
There was a nice young guy fishing beside me, about maybe twenty years old, whom I had gaffed a King for earlier. Finally he turned to me and said, "Mister, I have never gaffed a fish before but, if you have a gaff, I will try it for you."
I told him where my gaff was and he trotted off to get it. When he came back he told me he was nervous because he hadn't done this before and I told him, "Bud, we're just gonna get you a little experience now. Don't worry about it." He let the gaff down, did a professional sticking of the King and hauled it up and over the rail for me." None of the regulars could have done a better job.
As I was thanking the young man for gaffing my King, he told me again that he was really nervous while doing it. So I just told him that he did a great job and to stick around so we could get him lots of experience. So, anytime that young man hooks a King, I will be glad to lay down my rig and gaff his fish for him.
Oh yeah, my King weighed 15 lbs, 3 oz. What a way to bust the cherry on a new Spanish rig. The new rig is a Penn Slammer 460 and I put it on 7 1/2 foot med. heavy fast tip Saint Croix rod. The Slammer is loaded with 15 lb. test Power Pro. I put a 300 yard spool of the line on the reel and had to put another 100 yards of mono behind it to fill up the reel.

Good post and a nice fish on a spanish rig for sure.
I will be more than happy to gaff a fish for you anytime if you have a gaff as I don't.
Thanks for helping the anglers that do not have one. I depend on others to gaff mine and appreciate all the fine gaff men and women I have met on the Gulf Coast.
