Show your rod wrapper!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's is some of my setup. It's not much and mostly home made stuff but it'll wrap a rod pretty well. I usually use a bobbin in my hand but I can power wrap thread off my home made thread board just as easy. Here's a few pics now let's see what you have.

Simplicity.

Nice setup. I've been looking at sewing machine motors and foot controls on Ebay myself. How do you keep the motor turning while your flex coat is drying? Are those roller blade wheels for the rollers?

Yes it is. It's been around for a couple of years now. I just now set up the sewing machine motor drive, I usually just chuck the blank up in my my wood lathe and start turning but that darn wood lathe uses a lot of electricity.

Hey Justin, I use a different setup for finishing and drying. Those are model airplane wheels.

How do you like it direct drive Obie. I am going to put mine together soon. It's been so dam cold up here the last few days I haven't done anything on it lately. Hopefully I will be able to finish it up soon. Here's a pic of my chuck setup though. I still have to make a bracket for the sewing machine motor and hope to figure out a way to put my drying motor on the same bracket and just change the belt to it for drying. It'll be setup on unistrut. I'll be using roller blade wheels.

Very nice Rob, when my tires wear out I'm going for roller blade wheels as well. I like your chuck. I have a wonderful chuck on my lathe but just junk on the sewing machine motor, no problem I'll figure a way to overcome that issue. The direct drive seems fine, I can creep or fly.

Thanks Obie. Hopefully this weather will break so I can get out in the garage and finish it up. Below zero temps tonight. I hate it!

If i ever get some spare change this year..(currently paying 2 mortgages, so not anytime soon unfortunately) I would like to learn how to wrap custom rods. I know a little, but am currently reading a book that has made me realize to do it right, there is much more involved than what i was thinkin originally...I can't believe now there are people out there that can actually WRAP a cobia, tuna, etc. on a rod..amazing! If you don't mind me asking, how much do you have invested in just your instruments..i.e. motor, braces, etc. thx.

I've been collecting stuff for awhile and doubt if I have fifty bucks in it total. Maybe 75. I have pretty much everything I need but just have to cut some stuff out and put it together. That's not counting thread, guides, etc. but if you look around and have the time, you can find deals on that stuff too.

Hey Obie, A couple questions. I'm curious about your thread tensioning setup and is the carpet tape what you use for your reel seats? I plan on using fiberglass drywall tape.

The thread tensioners are made by flexcoat, you can buy them about anywhere for around $5-7 each. I use the double-sided carpet tape to hold the thread while doing butt wraps. I make my reel seat arbors with plain old masking tape.

......... Thanks again Obie. That would be about the simplest way to keep a buttwrap under control. By the time I get all this put together I should know quite a few little tricks. God knows it is taking me long enough.

I'm getting there. Here's a few pics. I'm working on my drying chuck and my thread rack/tensioning setup and I should be good to go.

Very nice setup Rob. Do the roller blade wheels usually come with bearings?

Yeah Obie, and you can pick them up at thrift shops for next to nothing. There's a shop close to me that has a big box of skates that I picked through and got a couple pairs that were almost new for 3 or 4 bucks a pair. I was even able to use the original hardware that attached them to the skates.

Nice, do you know if wheel and bearing sizes are standard throughout the industry? The only reason I ask is I have a bunch of rollerblade bearings. 8mm ID 22mm OD.

I have 3 different sets of wheels and I think all of the OD's are the same but the ID is a little smaller on one set. (5 thousandths) That shouldn't matter if you are going to use different hardware though. You'd just have to get hardware that fits the id of the bearings. These have a sleeve that fits the id and the bolt fits inside the sleeve. I used 70 mm wheels.

OK thanks, yeah I'm not too worried about the bearing ID, I can find or make anything work there. Actually I suppose I could fit the bearing in about any wheel just as well. I see they sell tons of wheels on ebay, I just wish they would sell 9 at a time instead of 8.

Yeah, that's why I used a different wheel on the top, and I made 4 stands but I doubt I'll use more than 3.

Hey Obie, When you made your PVC chuck, how did you attach it to your motor. Did you make or have a coupling? For my dryer, I'm thinking about just epoxying the "cup" to the shaft of the motor.

Yeah, I only use that PVC chuck for drying and it's just a clearance fit onto the drying motor shaft with a 10-24 set screw tapped into the base of the PVC cup.

There's a setscrew at the bottom on this hole.

I actually bought a chuck setup from Chris (snobbler) when he bought his power wrapper and now I'm using this setup for power wrapping.

By the way I really like the rail system you have and I'll probably make another setup more along your plans if you don't mind. Thanks.

Generation II, and just to keep some of the original DNA I used wood in lieu of plexiglass. I've always turned wrenches for a living so forgive my lack of wood working skills. Thanks Jigslinger for the inspiration!

Nice job Obie, and the colors even match!  I think you'll like the bearings. That chuck will make a difference too I'm sure.

My lathe works good, now all I have to do is figure out the actual wrapping part!

Actually the colors were pure luck. The unistrut came green, the wheels came yellow and I only had on can of spray paint in the shop and it was yellow. Anyway it runs pretty smooth but I still need to make some better spacers to keep the wheels from rubbing the stands. I have some nylon bushings in there now but they have a tad too much diameter and are slightly rubbing on the bearing shields. I can probably sand them down a bit more so they fit snugly against the bearing race.

Can you just put a washer between the wood and the bearing?
I guess that would end up giving you the same problem wouldn't it.

The washer would have to have a small O.D. These bearings have a 5/16" I.D. and the O.D. of the bearings inner race is around 3/8", so I just need to make a spacer with a 5/16" I.D. and a 3/8" O.D. and about 1/8" thick.

You guys have some great setups

I'm just getting back into it now

All my stuff is 'Old School' (1980s vintage)
Note: you can see the drying motor (bar-b-que roteisere) under the bench

Tiderider

Got to love the old school stuff, by the way David I think you need a couple more tackle boxes.
Pier#r

You have any you don't want, I'll give em a good home

Those are my 'legacy boxes' that have served well back into the late 1970s.

Now they serve as tackle storage
Believe it or not I purged serveral during our recent move
Jigslinger

That'll work David and a nice looking buttwrap on that blank too. I was in a guy's shop in Florence Alabama the other day and he uses bbq rotisseries for his dryers and he does it for a living. Nothing wrong with that!
