suggestion for public fishing piersi think piers that allow castnets would benefit from having a central livewell, especially ft. pickens. when 10 castnets LOAD UP with LYs and herring and are dumped on the 120 degree deck, more are killed than kept alive for bait. then everyone wonders , why there isn't as much bait as before. pollution, gillnets, commercial fishing, global warming, obama, etc. DUH! of course, there are so many stuck in the cracks that the pier smells disgusting every time you walk out on it. everybody wins with the livewell: the people that cannot throw a castnet, the people that are supposed to clean the pier, the tree huggers that feel sorry for the fried LYs and the livebait fishermen and women.

I agree dude

Yeah I totally agree as well, but unfortunately it would only be destroyed. Just like our rod rack at Pcola pier and the big cooler they had out there before. I seriously doubt anyone is going to lay out the funds to build a livewell on any public fishing spot.

LIVE WELLCAN YOU IMAGINE THE $$ THAT COULD BE MADE IF THERE WAS A LIVEWELL ON THE PIER????? I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ONE AROUND HERE BUT READ SOMEWHERE ABOUT ONE ON THE ATLANTIC COAST YEARS AGO. THE SAD THING IS, MOST PIERS DON'T ALLOW ANYONE TO THROW A CAST NET UNLESS THEY ARE "SPECIAL"...

We actually had live wells at the old GSP back in the early 80s From what i recall they barely lasted 2 seasons Maintenance problems-not making enough money you know the story

From out of the Blue, You can now throw a cast net again at P-cola Pier. In a small certain area.

Personally I think you would want to prohibit cast netting around the piers because of the amount of baitfish taken. Seems like it could seriously hurt the fishing if large amounts of bait were taken right off the pier. A livewell would be awesome though, but still getting bait elsewhere like all the other tackle shops, but the livewell could be done better since it is on the water. would need a lot of maintenance though. Just my thoughts.

This is the pier with the bait tank(Apache pier,North Myrtle Beach))It was very handy for the bait, I cleaned it everyother day that I was there and the bait did real well in it....This pier was privately owned by a campsite and the regulars watched everything....the end was for king fishing only and cost more to fish it....This was the middle of July and I was there every day/all day....and only saw 1 king caught about 7lbs... the guy working there said it was a nice one...

that's awesome...even one half that size would be great. i think a real nice one could be made out of a big old hot tub...plumbing is already on it and one in the junkyard would be the right price! but p'cola would have to decide on either the bait tank or the umbrella. seems like you could fish more too, since getting bait is a PITA sometimes.

Just my thoughts. | Uh dude, Do you know how hard it is to catch cigs or ballywhoo off a pier with a castnet? Not as easy as you think. Before the net bans there was plenty of cigs. Now with the net bans theres none. We need to have nets on piers. Mullet seasons coming. They arent hard to catch & theres an Abundunce of them. You cant give them away. Never ban cast netting. How do you think the bait you buy is caught?

Relax BigKenny, no foul intended. Like I said just my thought. Of course I wouldn't want them banned outright. I was talking purely on the pier. I'm sure almost all baitshops take there boats out to net their live bait and toss it in the live well. Its not easy but not that difficult, but like I said no foul intended. How would prohibiting castnets hurt the populations around piers? I would think it would allow them to flourish bringing in more bigger fish. I would think if they aren't around its because they are being drawn to something else, like other structure and maybe some new reefs would help.

I think beach renourishment has caused our bait problems. Also it has changed the surf we have today. We used to have great waves & now they suck for the most part. All this changed after Opal & beach rebuilding.

livewellI have actually fished on piers on the Atlantic that had huge livewells on the end of the pier. There was no extra charge for the live bait, but there was an additional charge to fish the end of the pier.

BaitwellBig Kenny is correct. It is harder than you might think to catch cigs and ballyhoo off the pier with a net. Even in the 70's when there were tons of cigs, you might have to throw your net all morning on large schools of cigs to finally get a bunch. Sometimes they would move in on the beach and it would be easier. When netting cigs was legal, a purse seine would catch more cigs in one setting than all the cigs caught off all the piers during a whole season. You would, however; think that the cigs in our area would have made a great comeback since the net ban, but they really have not.
