Sun, 6 Sept 09Got there at 5am...Wind was NE at 5-10...water clarity once the sun came up was decent, but not "Gin Clear"...After yesterday, I thought I was going to be on the late side for the spanish run...errrr....what spansih run...not alot happening when I got there...one or two spanish were coming over the rail, but certainly not in the numbers they were yesterday...managed 2 nice ones, but that was it...total of MAYBE 15 came over the rail then just when things seemd like they were getting going, the friggin air breather showed up and took a couple and that was that...as we were standing around, I noticed Keith in Stealth mode going from the SW side to his cooler and rigging up his king leader...when I looked over the SW side, there...for all to behold...was about a 40# sailfish...his sail was unfurled and was BEAUTIFUL...I threw a cig his way and he took a look, but turned...he was checking out several baits...I tried again and worked it fast and he came right over...My bait disappeared, but I didn't feel a hit at all...figured it was under him...then as he turned...PTHUUUU...he spit my bait... My cig was destroyed and I re-rigged with an LY that was right there...before I could throw out, he ate and spit another bait...I threw my LY and he came right over, mouthed it and spit AGAIN before I could set the hook... Before I could re-rig with a Cig he swam off to the SW...That is as close as I've EVER come to hooking a sail...it was awsome!!! and he was so pretty it made the AM better then it was...

Great story Dev. There sure has been alot of them seen this year. Sounds like you have to jack em up pretty quick. You'll get the next one.

Good story there Dev. Wish you had hooked him at least. As many years as I have been fishing piers in Fl. I have yet to see a Sailfish much less hook one.

I know why Devon didn't hook the sail.
He wasn't concentrating. He was singing at the top of his lungs, that old song, "Tiny Bubbles".
That's the real reason I left the end of the pier and went down to the Pompano hole. When I was down at the Pompano hole, I could just barely still hear him singing that silly song. (Somehow, I got the feeling that his choice of songs to sing may have had something to do with me)
And, he sure as hell ain't no Pat Boone or Frank Sinatra.

Jim is mistaken...the 'Tiny Bubbles" wasn't in refrence to him...Although I did hear he does have tiny bubbles, but that is a different thing all together...the Tiny Bubbles song was in my head this AM thanks to Matt Gonzalez, who started singing it and you know how it is when you get a song in your head...anyway, if I offended my good Friend Jim about his tiny...errr...singing tiny bubbles, I humbly offer my apologies.

You mean to tell me that you and Matt singing that song had nothing to do with my name suddenly being changed to Bubbles.
Offended??? No way. If I'm gonna dish it out, I have to be able to take it also.
Hmmm, I must be feeling guilty over having been caught with a bubble rig in my hand.
