Surf Fishing for CobiaI am about to take some of my West Coast wood to the beach and surf fish for Cobia like I used to do for Stripers in Cali. I am bringing my 11 1/2' Rainshadow and going to walk the beach at the end of Ft Pickens to avoid the tourists and see what I can do. That is my plan all weekend long to get a Cobe from the beach.......we shall see. I am heading out now so I will report my skunking in a few hours.

Good luck. I have caught Cobia fishing off the beach. I was stationed at Whiting field from 1962-65 and they were building the wooden pier at Navarre then. We would stand on the Sand doons , which were pretty high, and spot Cobia in the Surf. We would run down and they were many times within casting distance. We would do this until the workers building the pier knocked off work, about 4 pm ,then go out to half a pier and fish there. I even saw a Sailfish caught off the beach there

I caught this 9 ft Nurse off old Navarre pier in about 1965..The two boys now are in their 50's and attorneys in Pensacola..

No Cobes for me, but I had a good time! I ended up using my 2 3/8oz little neck popper the whole time because it casts like a bullet. It got bumped a few times by small blues but no Cobia. I am going to hit the beach early in the AM and put out two pomp rods with my cobe rod at the ready! I'm sure if I can see one I can reach it, even with the wind in my face I was getting great distance, gotta love braid!!!
