What reel is going on the rod? Typically, and this is old school, the stripper guide (first guide up from the reel) should have the same diameter as the spool of the reel. Then you can taper down from there to the tip. I go with 5 guides and usually run 70mm, 60, 40, 30 and then a 25 or 20mm. There are others who disagree with this logic and run up to nine smaller guides and claims that it stops line slap against the rod. I've never used that method so I don't know from experience. My Shimano Clarus has a ton of small guides and it works pretty good but the line tends to foul around the guides on occasion.

Obie your right it does reduce line slap and it also reduces line stress. But to me it adds to much weight to the blank and throws it out of balance.Multiple guides are a great concept i guess its preference.70,50,40,30,20.for kings ling 60,50,40,30,20 for schoolie king and spanish.Thats my story and im stickin to it.
