Underwrapping Guides and choosing handle materials

Do you have to underwrap guides? Whats the easiest handle material to use?
Tiderider

No you do not have to underwrap, there's been many, many rods built without underwraps, but if you do, make sure the guide feet are burr free, smooth and flat to the blank.
EVA foam is without a doubt the easiest handle material.  Size it a tad smaller than where it's going to be on the rod then use thin epoxy on the blank to slide the foam in place.  Make sure you have plenty of acetone or denatured alcohol and clean rags available to remove any unwanted glue residue off the grips and blank.

Like Obie said and dont wrap tight . Let the magical combination of thread and finish hold the guide on,not pressure.  If you have a grinder, grind those guide feet  down to a thin taper. You will produce flexability were unground guide feet will become a stress riser situation on the very ends of the feet.
