Van Stall vs. 706ZThis morning I fished my 706Z for the first time since I bought my VS 250 in June, 2007.
It was sort of like getting out of a Rolls Royce and driving a Ford Escort. Took a few minutes to figure out that all that free play in a 706 is really supposed to be there. It is non-existant in the VS. When catching small snake kings and large spanish I was having to crank the drag down tight to reel them straight up to the rod tip while the VS handles the job easily.
I think I will fish the VS tomorrow again.

you are starting to sound like some of those pff up starts robert. saw a guy in gs using a vs for a bait rig and a fella asked him why he would use a vs for a bait rig. he said he had 2 reasons, the first reason was that he could and the second reason was that he left the zeebaas at home. caught an ly and started fishing a 706..

steve, you know that reel was made long before you ever had a powder coated 706 right? so, are you flattering the original owner/designer of VS because you're imitating his reel from over a decade ago?
now, with that being said, i still love me a 706!! and wish i had a dozen more. sure, a van staal is a fine reel. very fine indeed. but just not worth the price tag in my opinion. well, for pier fishing anyways... when it comes to chunking big poppers for tuna at the rigs, i do think the VS is slightly more capable. line capacity is one big perk. so, i'm saving some cash to get a VS275 or VS300 for this winter. i've got a goal of a 100+lb tuna on spinning tackle and i think my best shot is with a VS on my my old gator (since it's the only rod tha wasn't stolen a few months ago)

like, do you lurk the boards and fine stuff you do not agree with and
show out in front on your buds. you saw the behind my post. you need to continue to find rats to pick on and leave grown folks alone. this thread was not serious to anyone and all of a sudden you come out like a responce on pff. i do not give a rats ass what you or anyone else fish, robert and i do this on mutiple boards. btw do you know who owns that red vs and how long it has been red? if so tell them tackett said they have a nice reel. i am sure since they copied me, they know of me... have a nice day...

It could be yours. It is on fleaBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220488789090&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT) right now! I actually wouldn't mind having it, but don't think I will pay the asking price.
Back to the subject.....Van Staal is superior, but sometimes the cons (PRICE) outweigh any pros (pretty...(I'm only kidding here), smoother, more durable, extra line capacity, etc.)!
|
ghettowrapped
|
with the advent of braid, i don't see how line capacity is even an issue anymore.
|
seminole73

I don't typically use braid while fishing from the pier. Only time I consider it is during cobia season. I still can't outcast any of the "top dogs" on the pier, so it really adds no advantage to me. Plus mono is just my comfort zone. To each their own.

dang steve... didn't mean to piss you off. if i was wrong, my bad. but, from my understanding, that reel you pictured is one of the original reels made years and years ago as a prototype. wasn't trying to call you out. sorry if your feelings got hurt. but, what "buds" am i trying to show out in front of? if you were to pay attention to everything i write on either forum (i'm sure you have better things to do with your time), then you'd know, i don't lurk any boards looking for something i disagree with. and i have never "looked for rats" to pick on. i guess you're back on the thing between ben and myself... once agian, it's between ben and me. ben seems to say plenty of things that i don't agree with, and because of my friendship with him, i feel like i can say a lot more than i would to most people. i assumed it would be fine to make a comment to you as well. guess i was wrong. it has nothing to do with kids or grown ups or anything. i'll refrain from commenting on your future posts.
to answer your question, no, i don't know the person who owns that reel. but, i was under the impression it is in the hands of either the original owner of van staal, or a worker maybe. again, sorry if my assumption was incorrect.
as for the pff referral.. not really sure what that means, or why that matters. if you have a problem with the way i conduct myself, please feel free to discuss it with me, don't get your feelings hurt and come back at me like that.
if you don't give a crap about what i or other people fish, then what the heck are you doing arguing in every 706 thread that pops up? this is a forum, a place of discussion. this topic is about comparing 2 reels. i think i was fine by stating my opinion. no need to attack that.
i don't have a problem with you. i've never had a problem with you. and i'm sorry if it comes across to you like i look for arguments, but really, i just get bored and do a lot of reading here. sometimes i come across something i disagree with, or i think my opinion might add to the discussion. so, again, i'm sorry if i offended you. and if it makes you feel better, i'll refrain from commenting on any of your posts for the sake of civility.
thank you sir, and you have a nice day as well :)

i will ask this though... do you know the person who owns that reel? is it a newer reel that has a recent powder coat job? if so, i'm curious about the story. please share if you have any info...

Rob Koelewyn is the owner of that red van staal (the original owner and creator of van staal and as well as the owner and creator of zeebaas). Really nice guy to deal with. I know this because I just bought that red staal as well as the blue one he had.
If anyone wants to look at them i will be fishing Pcola pier this fall and cobia season and will have them out there some, so don't hestitate to ask.
Also, for those zeebaas followers...a lot of people have mixed feelings about the adjustable drag system on the zeebaas, and Rob mentioned that they will be changing it to a more traditional style similar to that of the van staal.

Though have no experience with 706s I have used Penn's for years. I am a lefty so Penn didn't really offer a Manual with the correct rotation. I would have easily bought a nice 707z had this been the case. It wasn't so I bought a Lefty Van Staal 250. It was the last of the leftys that Van Staal had in black. All of the new ones are going to be gold only. I am glad that I caught deal in the nick of time.
So far the Van Staal is just killer. It has been nice that every time that I have used it I have caught fish. Obviously that is not due to the reel, but it has been so sweet to use a modern reel with this kind of capability and smoothness with the correct rotor direction for a lefty. Finally I am able to not have to compromise. Sure the Mitchells that I was using got the job done and were a great training tool for manuals all summer, but Van Staal is really in a different league. As for 706s... I just bought a decent Z for my son for 60$. He loves that dang bearing noise..... me, not so much.

I'm a lefty, and have acquired a 705 greenie. I've put a manual kit on it, but have never used a manual. Will the rotation cause me a problem with the manual? Should I use the bail instead?
Advice is appreciated.
|
blaminack

It should be fine. It is just awkward if you are used to the "proper" rotation. If it is the only thing that you have used your brain has nothing to compare it to. I have a 705 as well with a manual and it works but I have to mentally work at it all of the time to keep my hands from trying to do it normally.

if you look at a picutre of a current zeebaas, you adjust the drag by turning the whole top of the spool....instead of having that...they are going to switch to a drag knob similar to that of a van staal.
|
ghettowrapped
|
i'm just ignorant of that fact...i have never even touched one. so if you tried to feather the rim of the spool for a little extra drag, would you run the risk of adjusting the drag knob?

Yeah, that was the biggest issue i saw with them. Sometimes i turn the spool of a reel to get the line where i want it to throw and with the zeebas it would adjust the drag.
