What kind of fish is this?

I seen schools of these off the PCB pier but they wouldn't bite anything..
What kind of fish is this and what do they bite?
--Nick

Well the image didn't work

I will describe them they are about a foot long but round not as round as a flounder but look thicker.  They have black stripes down them. Someone told me they are called angel fish, but I didn't think that is what they are called.  I seen some of them at the top of this forum on the rotation of pics..

Cobia is what I see in that picture.

Could be but the last time I was in Pensacola there were some "angelfish" on the east side of the pier. They looked like spadefish but they had long, trailing fins
NickPC

I think it was spadefish!!

Thanks,
Nick

I agee with Manny, Spadefish. Many years ago we caught some at the jetties in St. Andrews on red worms using small hooks. They are not bad eating. My Uncle Pat used to love them.

The fish with the long trailing fins was probably a lookdown fish.

There's also the possibility of African Pompano.

Jigslinger

Could have been either. After looking around online I thought they could have been lookdowns. Could have been the African pomps too but they moved too slow. Fins looked like they were too long to make a fast getaway an option. They didn't pay any attention to a pomp jig.
jewfish

There's quite a few lookdown fish hanging around by the pier right now here in PCB. I've caught them down south before on gotcha plugs, they're supposed to be pretty tasty.

trowel fish to be politically correct.
NickPC

Lookdown fish is one of the most akward looking fishes I have ever seen.

I haven't seen any pictures in this thread thus far of a "bar jack". What we call a "bar jack" is actually a Banded Rudderfish. Hardtail fishermen keep them all the time because they look similar in shape to a "Hardtail",  real name Blue Runner. Also of note is most of the "bar jacks" that the Hardtail fishermen are keeping from the pier are illegal because they are too small.

Banded Rudderfish - Seriola zonata

Family Carangidae, JACKS AND POMPANOS

Description: fish less than 11 inches long have dark band from eye to first dorsal fin and six prominent bars on body; larger fish are bluish, greenish, or brown; soft dorsal base about twice the length of the anal fin; tail-lobe white tipped

In this picture you can see that it's a juvenile and easily identifiable.

The shorter girl on the left is holding an adult Banded Rudderfish. Most adults do not have the easily identifiable features like this fish does.

In this "artist" picture from the FWC website you can see that this adult Banded Rudderfish has no bars or lines at all.
