Take a dead cig, hook it in some fashion through the head. Throw it out, let it sink, reeling every so often to give it the appearence of a dying bait fish. You have now mastered snobbling. I use a 27# to 45# single strand steel leader about 12 to 18 inches long with a number 12 or 10 swivel and a number 6 or 4 treble hook. The size of the particular items all depend upon water clarity, the clearer the water the smaller the component.

...and thats basically how everyone does it here with some form of baitfish or another, using the same or similar hardware that the original pier pest described. Most of these answers will be the same with slight variations.

If you get real brave you can do what a buddy of mine did one day when everybody was getting shorted. Replace the steel leader with 120# fluorocarbon and pray you don't get cut off. He put two on the pier that day. Although he lost six others.

I like two 40lb or 60lb sevenstrand and a number 2 treble.I've lost too many big fish on the pier with small hooks due to the fact of having to put too much pressure on them in the piling at the gaff.

I'm no expert but they hit my 60 lb sevenstrand as a leader on a frozen cig and a rattletrap. Now, today I couldn't buy a bite and I used 30 lb sevenstrand.
Seems when they are feeding they hit it regardless.

I like a #2 treble and 27# sevenstrand, I do use some 60 when they aren't being selective.

I've fished for them down in Tampa off the Skyway much the same way we do here. I would drift a small spanish mack or big threadfin out with the current. Think I hooked 5 or 6 fish one day doing that.

Big rod
14-17lb clear line
A steel leader with a swivil on the end
some good sized treble hooks
Thats pretty much the simplst rig you can ask for.
For bait you can buy frozen cigar minnows, or but a sabiki rig and catch live miinow. Or I sometimes scavenge the pier for left behind minnows that people caught and frogot.
You want to cast where the wind is blowing to, not against it, the kings will almost always come up wind.
Hook your minno through the eye and out the top of the hard skull.
Cast out as far as possible and always keep an eye on your bait. Also dont let it sink to far down, if it starts doing that jerk it up a bit until you can see it, just be able to see your bait.
If you see a king come in let him chew on it for about three seconds then set the hook really hard.
Then the king will probably shoot out like a rocket and you will have to try to cross everyone elses line with out getting tangle ups.
Once the king is tired and close in do you best to keep his head out of the water and away from the pilings, a mouth full of air will calm him down.
Call for a gaffer and let him do his thing.

So you wanna catch a Kingfish you? this is a little unorthodox but will bust some ass when the fish get lockjaw. tie small wire leader (27 lb) to a #2 SILVER live bait hook...go about 4 inches down and tie a stinger (4x silver treble) then again a stinger off that stinger... then ...heres the key :find some fresh silver eels (aka cutlass fish) between 12 and 16 inches....I know it sounds like a strtch but trust me on this one

I forgot to mention....whats the deal with swivels here???? I tie a tight albright at the leader and it handles business...
