I would say that 5 guides would be the minimum and I personally would use 6 plus the tip. I would use single foot guides in sizes 25-20-16-10-8-7.
Another thing I would do, assuming the handle and reel seat aren't already in place, would be to have only a 6" rear handle as opposed to a 12" handle. Why you may ask. Two reasons, first it will effectively give you a 6 1/2' rod, second short handles are easier to fish with on the pier rail. If you go this route you might consider using a 30 for a stripper guide instead of a 25, leave the rest of the guides as previously stated.
One last suggestion. Mount your reel seat with the locking rings toward the top instead of toward the butt. It is more comfortable when casting repetitively and fighting fish. It also keeps the heel of your palm from working the lock ring loose while fishing.

debigone is right about taking the time to locate the rod's spline. It makes all the difference between an efficient rod and a POS.

This wouldn't be a bad choice if your on a tight budget on this stick:

If you want to go bucks up and want some indestructible guides:

I recently built a rod for my son with these and they awesome you can bend them till the outer edge of the ring touches the blank, then release it and they spring back into place with no distortion. The recoil tip top is ugly though I used a ceramic top.
