Hello all,

Found this forum after my Memorials holiday day trip to the Okaloosa Pier this year.
Enjoy learning and reading of other experiences in this forum.  I went back and try my luck on July the 4th weekend and had a couple of King on but was not able to get them up to the pier.  First one got away due to lack of experience line were cut on pier post.  The other got a way due to lack of help or guidance from more experience people who were there.  I ask for help and after a little while one volunteer, to help with his brand new graff.  We got the fish on the graff and still lost it, because I did not know to open up my bail and when the fish shake off my line broke and the fish fall back into the water.
People are much friendlier in the forum then are at the pier.  Hope I can gain enough experience to one day help out some one like me now to have a better first time experience.  This would be a great site to leaned thanks for sharing!

Hi my name is james I am from ohio but moved to alabama in 1990 been here almost 20 years now near gulfshores i have worked in a couple tackle shops built rods and repaired reels in orange beach ,I also worked the gulf state park where I worked at the pier  fixin rental rods and reels ,I am a fishin nut  I like catchin kings the most it drives me crazy to hear the drag and roller from my manual spinnin reel I know what a crack head feels to have an addiction as king fishin is my monkey on my back. i am awaiting the opening of the new 1520 ft pier in gulf shores to open the 20th of july its going to be the best pier around I belive. I am an aircraft mechanic(tech) at goodrich aerostructures in foley alabama I build new and refurbish reverse thrusters for alot of diffrent aircraft like fedex  jet aircraft its quite the challange but I like challanges like enticing a king to bite my dead ass ely lol I dont know about you guys but I cant think of anything better to do than stand on the end of a pier and watch a king mackrel hit a 1 oz live bait at 40 mph and sky rocket 30 ft into the air with it in its mouth then the anticipated run on my reel pulling drag for 200 yards in about 5 seconds that makes me feel alive!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe one day we can fish together and you can gaff my next king or maybe i can gaff yours buddy its nice to meet you all my name is James!!

Welcome to the forum.  Sorry to hear about your pier fishing experience, it can be a bit callous in the heat of the battle.  I hope next time is a better time.

Welcome to the forum.  I think you're right about the new GS Pier, it will be a mackerel massacre as soon as the gates open.  Just yesterday I got to experience a nice skyrocket king (caught) and the resulting scream of my old stainless steel ball bearing Mitchell roller.

Hello fellas, new guy from GA here. Found the forum while searching for some reports from the new dan russell pier in PCB. We vacation down there several times a year and i started pier, surf, and jetty fishing last year.

For a newbie i did pretty good, caught quite a few pompano and spanish last year. Heading down this weekend and im hoping to do even better this year, weather permitting! Im currently fishing with entry level gear but i plan to upgrade as the hobby becomes a passion. Thanks to all the guys who contribute to the reports and offer advice to us new guys!

My name is Jeb, also known by the name pier pest, I grew up fishing the Gulf State Pier from the age of five til present. I know have two children of my own and for the last 4 years i have not been able to introduce my eldest son to the joy and tradition that is fishing on the pier. Well come this weekend that is all going to end because there will now be a bait catcher riding out on my cart come friday afternoon. I look forward to hearing from friends old and new and also look forward to hooking up on something big, i have been in kind of a slump the last few years.

Welcome to the forum.  My best advice is fish, fish, fish and watch how the folks that are doing most of the catching are fishing.

Hey Everybody, The names Jeremy and I'm out of Panama City.  I'll be heading to the PCB pier this afternoon for the first time.  I probably wouldn't have heard about the pier if it weren't for this site.  I look forward to learning how to "bring em over the rail".  Great site guys!

Hey guys,

Names Chris, I'm out of Gulf Shores since last December and working my way through college currently.  Been fishing the saltwater since I got here and  learning all the ropes. Got to love this site and thanks to those who maintain and run it! Cant wait to get out there some more, I've been hooked since day one!

My name is Toby. I live in Cullman County Alabama. I have been a fishing nut all of my life but only get to saltwater fish once a year (while on vacation). I really got interested about 6 years ago - just a little time to get started before a hurricane rips the pier apart. Yuk! Long story short - my wife and I come down every September - I fish and she enjoys the beach...sometimes she even joins me. You can't ask for more. I'll be down this year Sept 13-17 so I'm sure I'll meet some of you on the Gulf State Park pier. I hope to learn more about pier fishing than I know now. Hopefully I can hook up on a few nice fish - and some good eatin' keepers would be good too! See yall then. Nice to meet yall in advance. God Bless! Toby

Not an avid pier fisherman, don't like the sometimes crowded conditions and it is hard to land a heavy fish.Back in the mid 1980's would fish the PCB pier a lot but usually at night after the crowd thinned out and will make it a point to try it this fall.Hope to meet some of you.

Hey guys, I've been reading the old posts on this forum. Obie, thanks for starting it.   I joined last month before our annual summer trip. Acutally I was born in PC and feel like a native. I may even be related to some of you.All of my people are in FL. I live in LA and have for many years. My dad used to work for IP in  PC, but transferred here when the Natchez,MS mill opened. I have fished all of the piers in PC for many years. I have probably fished with some of you. Jake, I agree with you these guys post a lot of useful fishing info. I really enjoy the banter of Legend, Kidcobia, Jewfish, Seanspots and the rest of you guys who post regularly. I don't know how much I will follow when hunting season starts. I am bipolar (fishing and hunting) and I have not switched poles to hunting yet. Keep us land locked guys informed about fishing and we will fish with you when we can. I know my avator is kinda googanish, with the catfish and all, I plan to update soon. That one was caught on a white jig with a 12 foot Daiwa and my 7 while striper fishing at the dam. I really only think it wood be googanistic if I perhaps caught him on my neighbors trotline, while he was at church and didn't rebait the hook. By the way that one was 20 lb . Don

What was yours? I don't know.    The reason I'm helping Frank is because I actually took a pic of him with my cellphone and I made it his avatar on the other forum server we was at.

Hi all.

I stumbled on this forum right about the time GSP opened up. I have enjoyed reading about the new pier. My wife and I and, as of this last spring, our grandson stay at Four Seasons and fish off of their pier. We make this trip each year from Arkansas. I was wondering where I would post for that pier. The best I could figure would be the Bays, Bridges, Beaches and Ft. Pickens forum.

Here's a link to a post about the last vacation...

Welcome to the forum JimD         Probably the best place to post for the Four Seasons is the Bays, Bridges, Beaches and Ft. Pickens forum.   As you know Four Seasons is a very private pier and is not very friendly to us local fisherman.

Thank you, I thought that would be the place. You are right about it being private. It sure is convenient though when you are from out of state. It's nice to walk out of your room right onto a pier. I may sound like a condo owner, but I'm not, I wish I was though.

Hello everyone , My name is Eric and I've been pier fishing almost all my life.  I've fished the old Dan Russell pier, Okaloosa pier, Navarre pier, and the P'cola Pier.  I call Pensacola my home, but I'm stationed in Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, for now.  I wished I joined the Navy, cos I hate living in the midwest for obvious reasons.   Hopefully, I can make it for cobia season next year.

I haven't looked here in a while, a lot of new folks here, welcome and hope I can be of some help to you. Sunofish, that is not a normal week to judge by, there were so many tourists and foreigners that couldn't speak english it was just a mess, and tempers were flaring. Go out when it is not so crowded, July 4th week is a really bad one to judge by.

Sir, everyone has the right to enjoy themselves and fish no matter what language they speak.  I understand your frustrations, I really do.  I'm sure if you needed to ask someone to move over or if they are doing something wrong, you could, politely, let them know.  They might not fully understand you, but I'm sure they'll get the message.     Or better yet, like you said, stay away during the holidays.

Docson, you must not have been there that week to understand. It was combat fishing at its worst early in the AM, nuts throwing over everyone WHILE they had fish on, tangling you up (same guys repeatedly), letting their fish wrap yours at the gaff, not moving out of the way when you are yelling coming down (I know enough spanish and was using that too if that was their language). It was just a disaster, and it was so bad it was hard to enjoy, and especially to judge anything or any one by. That was the point I was making. I have no judgement on where anyone is from or what language is their native tongue, but they need to exercise some common sense and try to understand what is going on or get out of the way until they know better. So, welcome, and don't read anything into my posts that isn't there, I have no hiden agendas or axes to grind.

Greetings, I'm looking forward to spending some time in Gulf Shores again.

I can't wait to see the new pier too. It was pretty sad seeing it in the condition it was in  right after the hurricane.

Gulf Shores is my favorite place to stay when I can get away and do a bit of fishing. I've been coming down since the 1980s.

We never stopped even after the hurricane. It was an awesome transformation. I enjoyed seeing the sand being piped back on the beaches as it signaled Gulf Shores was coming back!!!!!!!

The new pier looks fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

I really like getting up around 3 am and heading to the pier to get some fishing in before daylight. Hopefully we'll catch a couple this trip!

My son was able to get away from work and his wife gave him flight clearance to go while she even though she was unable to take any time off work.

All the stars are lined up and it will be fun even if we have to work fishing around the rain.

Look forward to seeing the folks here in real time action on the pier after reading the forums here.

Bill
