I hope this post doesn't ruffle feathers as Ernie didn't ask me to do this, but I had to brag on the guy a bit.
I have come to appreciate custom rods as they seem to me to be the best value out there. I have had four built so far, and all of them by Ernie. Today I picked up two rods that I ordered for my wife and daughter. I must say that I am a bit jealous! These rods are just bad as can be! The work is immaculate and the blank selection is just exactly the action and strength and casting ability that I had in mind. My wife and daughter couldn't be more thrilled by them.
So Ernie, THANKS!
Not only has Ernie been building me some wicked rods that I can't help but be proud of, he has also spent a TON of time teaching me the tricks to building rods for myself. He has been amazingly generous with his knowledge and his time. Because of this he has gotten me addicted to rod building. I have been showing off the rods that Ernie coached me through building to the point of being obnoxious. I can't help it! I am just silly with pride over them. Heck I built them! What a pleasure to catch a nice fish on a rod that you built for yourself. I can totally see why folks get hooked on it.
Anyways back to Ernie. I FULLY recommend his work if you are looking for a bad freaking rod that will blow minds on the pier.
Again thanks Ernie. _________________ Master of the obvious... |

I do not have an Ernie built rod but have seen and held several and they are very nice rods. I have met him and he is an extremely nice guy. There will probably be an Ernie built rod in my future. _________________

Gonna see if he'll do me up a 9ft Viper King rod in Dec or Jan. Need it to match my Turguois 706. Also gonna do up a 402 the same color. _________________ I'd rather be Pompano fishing ! |

If I ever was to pay for a custom rod I would have Ernie build it. He does nice work for sure. _________________ Go Fishing you can't catch them sitting on the couch!!!

Is a two piece custom rod ok or is it a kind of dumb idea. I would rather fish a one piece but getting them to and from PC is another story.
I tried to PM Earnie back in June to see if he had a two piece rod for sale I could pick up in Sept but I probably screwed up the email.
Ended up buying one HalfHitch rod and 4 other used shelf rods but would still like to consider a custom 2 piece. |

I don't want to speak for Ernie, but if a two piece is what you need then that is what it would take for it to fit your needs and that is what custom is about. Meeting your needs on a high end level, for the most part.
That being said, if there is ANY way possible to make a one piece work then that is the direction that I would go. Two piece rods have a tendency of coming apart on the cast making for embarrassing moments and shouts of "googan"! Really, to me they seem to be inherently weaker than one piece rods. They do have the down side of shipping expense and travel hassles. But I still seem them as worth it. My 9' rods fit in my Explorer and still have room for four passengers. I just lay the butt across the back seat and put the tips under the center of the dash... just mi dos centavos _________________ Master of the obvious... |

Dos barras barras de pieza son definitivamente googan. Quiero decir, Bobby tiene uno, para que te dice todo lo que necesita saber allí mismo. _________________ This message was brought to you by the Partnership for a Googan-Free America. |

Yeah, but if I remember correctly he used it to catch a 42# mahi from the pier...???? That could have been sold for 400$ apparently had the 400lber not beat him to it or something like that.... _________________ Master of the obvious... |

This is Linda, I don't believe Ernie has seen this thread yet. Thank you for the kind words.
Calvin your rod is sweet!!!
Bill, I'm not a girly girl and am not big on pink, but after seeing your 2 rods I had Ernie wrap my redfish kayak rod in that same color pink. Can't wait to bow up a giant redfish on it.
T-Boy - sorry about not getting your email, not sure what happened....As far as the 2 piece rod - if they are put together right they are as strong as a 1 piece imo. We have tiny little arrows that help me alighn my surf rods correctly. Also Ernie fished a 2 piece Cobia rod a whole season either last year or the year before. I'm not the expert but if you want a 2 piece rod, Ernie can deff make you a nice one. He's out fishing the pass right now but when he comes back he will chime in... _________________ http://www.cavittscustoms.com
