ok i know no one knows how its gonna be since you cant predict fish but i want to get as ready as possible for the ling season next year. So far i have my rod which is a 1088 american tackle which is enough of a rod i believe, a 706 which will have 30# moimoi, and a about a dozen different jigs. Any more advice or other things recomended?

Lots of patience, good eyes, and a lot of target practice with your 706.

Right on Nite Legend...you have to have good eyes and must must be able to present that jig in the right spot or you can hang it up......Me personally I get my target practice in sight fishing for pompano of the pier.....Its a great way to hone you target and sight skills.

Just remember a pompano jig is a little different than a cobia jig.  Same principle, different weights.

Yeah I dont think I am going to show up for cobia season. Everyone goes wild once one is spotted. It is also very crowded. Also I am not the best caster.

I'm due for my time. Hooked up and lost one decent fish, choked one and then had some out of range or googan interference.

I have four shorts netted and released and a 50 lb. plus lost on the pilings of the old pier when it was fenced off to my credit.

I have yet to put a legal cobia on the pier.

You have to judge the wind but, like nite legend said lead the fish and its always best to land a lil on the deep water side just in case the fish turns out

Hooks? Are you supposed to put a hook on the jig for a cobia??

No wonder I can't land them.

All joking aside one of the hook rigs for butterfly jigs may be a useful addition...?

something that messed me up when i first start cobia fishing was putting to much pressure on myself to catch one, just kinda go with the flow of things if you know what i mean. never take your eyes off the water, and always have your rod with you. make sure all of your tackle is in premier condition. check your line, leader, swivel. and always remeber that if you go out there enough, it is only a matter of time before you will have a chance to catch one. if you dont have that great of eyes then go somewhere on the pier were you are all by yourself.

We should get someone to stay in a condo and pot fish with a telescope!!! Or just put a "rode" in the helicopter.

That reminds me. I was at Dan Russell several years back and we were watching this guy in a parasail and a few of us had suggested that he should have a rod in his hand. As he got closer you could see that he actually did have a rod in his hand and you could see this little orange jig hanging!       That was the same day that this guy was walking on the pier with this hot chick and he had a t-shirt on that said, "My stick smells like chapstick". Maybe some of you remember that?
