I'm not absolutely sure what a Googan is but I don't think I want to be one when I come down in September.

Please give me some tips on how to avoid being a Googan.

As always your comments are appreciated.

MMM, interesting request, I'll have to think on what it takes not too be a googan.  #1 don't put a cig on a bottom rig, cast if off the end into the deep dark blue and say you're king fishing.  Next......

If you plan on bringing a 12ft. surf rod, with a 12 hook sabiki, w/a 4oz. pyramid lead you might be a googan

If you are reading this forum and have to get the folks in the shack to set you up with tackle then you are probably a googan.

If you walk down the pier with your crawfish lures still attached to your prized bass gear, you might be a googan.

Along those same lines, if you have a jitterbug in your tackle box while pier fishing could suggest googanism.

if you have to ask how not to be a googan, chances are you are a googan... not that there is anything wrong with being a googan. just watch, listen and learn. you must walk before you run.

Yes, be aware of what's going on around you, trying to make a cast while there's a fella passing behind you with a bowed up rod usually doesn't make many friends and could be considered googish.

King fishing with braid can also cost you your manual finger.

50 PP is so I don't get my fingers cut, way overkill, I know. I also don't use a manual reel. I do have a 302 that I will be using with #15 mono.

I have used Fireline for years on my King rod. Burns through mono like magic. Come to the new PCB pier Ben and you will see probably 70% of the locals fishing braid on their King reels.

I do believe that last time I fished with Gary Wells he was fishing PP on his rod. Do you consider Gary a googan?

70% locals use braid That # is WAY high...at least for locals on PCB pier. More like 30%  for kings especially

Pretty sure Gary uses braid for Ling not King   Like most people

So,

I guess bringing my Fly Rod to roll cast a frozen cig out to the kings will put the Googan Stamp on you fairly quick.

Those back casts seem to annoy the folks behind you anyway.

I know braid isn't the preferred line for king fishing, I just like it because it gives me better line capacity on small reels, gives me the ability to horse a fish when need be and it burns through tourist rigs like butter.

Honestly, I've pretty much forgotten how to fish with mono, it's been so long.

It's OK to use a Gotcha. It's NOT OK to stick it in someone's ear. If you try to use a Gotcha in the middle of a bunch of people fishing with cigs, then you are probably a Googan.

Set in the way rods in the Pomp hole in March and April is a Googan move.
Jig fish or get out of the way.

Yup, got two of them today, on braid. Plus a big spanish. However, there were a few googans who were using braid, and left trash all over the place.

Good deal Jewfish.

I like braid, but a lot of the time it doesn't like me. Wind knots in it are a SOB, it can be hell on gear as well. I like it for bottom fishing b/c of the 0 stretch,  and I have it on one Ling rod for the pier (that I don't fish that much) and that's about it. Everything else is gonna b mono.

I definitely see the benefit of using mono for kings, just haven't gotten around to spooling up a reel with it yet. Pretty much everything else gets a flourocarbon leader and braid.

Laugh all you want at the braid on my cobia rig but there aren't too many people who can get it out as far as I can. Marshall would be a likely exception.

Shadow also has braid on his cobia rod. I've seen him put an eel right on a sheepshead's nose too.

Shadow: "Firth shot!"
Me: "Shadow, that's a freaking sheepshead!"
Sheepshead: "WTF?"
