Anyone ever used one? Was thinking about picking one up from BPS until I can get my hands on a nice used 706 or something, and or have the money. Its got the capacity for big 'uns just not sure about its reliability.

I have one that I haven't used yet.  I was actually impressed with the quality for 30 bucks.  The thing is HUGE, though.  I couldn't imagine holding in all day.

I wouldn't expect much for a $32 reel but the Diawa Black and Gold reels are tough as nails and lots of commercial and charters use them for years.  http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs...MID=BOTTOM_selectitems#itemDetail

Well I actually found one of these guys today at walmart too being sold as a combo. Seems pretty sturdy but definitely a monster heavy thing. Its ok if I get aggravated I'll just throw it at the fish Hahaha. I use my baitrunner most of the time but would like to set up a nice set up for some bigger fish so I may just get a nice senator but who knows. What do you guys think? A fishing reel less than $80 with enough capicity for big kings, tarpon, and some small to med sharks?

Mitchell 302. Lots of line capacity, and you can find one for about 30$. And if it breaks there a lots of English speaking folks(the forum) that can help. They are not throw away reels. Heavy duty enough to handle big Cobia.

Even though the 302 or 303 (lefty) is out of production there is enough of them around for sale with plenty of backup and additional customized parts available. You don't like to, or know how to, use a manual. Fine. Leave the bail on. The enormous line capacity of a 302 still remains the same. And its a light weight reel weighing in at just under 22 ounces comparable in weight to a 706 or Van Staal 250. I've seen those big ass Daiwa reels in Wal-Mart. Yall are right. Those things are huge. I'm surprised they weigh just 30 ounces, looks like more. 8 ounces between reels doesn't seem like much until you're holding it all day on the pier.

i might be going out on a limb here but i pretty sure the reason it is only 30 ounces[still alot] and not 35 or 40 is the gears are made of plastic most likely

not according to the specs.
"The stainless steel main shaft and lightweight aluminum spool are fully anodized for superior corrosion resistance. Weighing just 30 oz., the metal reel features durable metal gears, multi-disc drag and an efficient 1 stainless steel ball bearing system."

According to the description it sounds like a lot of reel for the money and at 30 ounces it sounds like a lot more reel than I want to fish with.  Calvin is right 8 more ounces sounds as if it is no big deal but an extra 4 - 5 ounces is a noticeable chunk after just a few hours of fishing.  I also second Obie's call on the Black and Gold.  It is pretty much the same reel they started making in the late 70's tried and true.  get a BG60 for less than three times the cost of this reel and you'll have a durable reel that,  in the right hands will take care of any fish worth bringing over the rail.

it hasn't been mentioned yet, but i kinda like the daiwa emcast. very good rod for surf fishing. i've got one with 20lb braid and on the right rod, i'm pretty sure i can throw it "as far as the eye can see." plus it has a decent drag system. biggest problem is weight. but for surf fishing, that's fine.

I have read glowing reports on the emcast on some of the Eastcoast surf fishing boards.

Here's a link Tiderider posted that shows you how to drill your maingear to make it a crosswind. It works and is reversible. Lots of good info on this link. Thanks again Obie.

Check with The Fisher-man. He probably has some. A lot of time he has stuff that is not posted on e-bay. Just send him a message and he will get back to you pretty quick. I have bought several items from him this way. If not he usually puts one up every week or so. good luck

Some good advice from you all. Seems like every dollar saved right now is valuable. Any idea's on some used 302's? Been looking around craigslist and haven't found one yet but i'll keep looking. That and a new castnet. Mine is totally trashed beyond repair, but I hear there's some place on 98 towards daphne/fairhope that sells 'em cheap for mullet and what not. I'd love a BG or maybe even an Emcast but the bank is seriously tight especially with the new pier being $8 a pop. I love it but ouch! Thanks guys!

Spend some time looking over this thread as there is a lot of valuable info there for Mitchell newcomers.
http://emeraldcoastpierfishing.myfastforum.org/about990.html
Ebay has tons of 302's. Get one there and follow the guidelines in that thread.

Just bought a used 302 on ebay, paints a little scuffed but with some tlc she'll be perfect! Thanks guys, even thought about picking up a 2nd. Any suggestions on a good rod to pair it to on the cheap? Maybe 8-9 ft king rod?

Sorry not wanting to step on any toes, repeating same 'ol questions. I appreciate the help though. I may be looking for something a little better though as I fish a lot. I moved down last december from Utah and have been fishing since I got here. Still getting my feet wet though and hoping for my first king. I'll put the time in though and I'm sure it will come soon enough. How about this rod? http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs...02002_151000000_151002000_151-2-2

I'm sure most of these guys would agree with this. I felt that rod the other day at bass pro. It is way to stiff for kinig fishing. It is a nice rod but it is as stiff as a broom stick

For the $125.00 or so that rod would cost to your door you can probably get Obie to build you a decent King rod. I would PM him (tiderider) and see what he can do.

topher, would you be opposed to a 7'6" custom king rod? or are you wanting to stick in the 8-9' range. i just might have something to make you happy...
i have a gator BS592 (power rating 5, 92 inches) split foam grips. pac bay guides. plain jane thread work, nothing fancy but it'll flat out fish. i built 2 identical to each other. one has been fished, the other still brand new. only problem is it's in navarre and i'm not there to deliver it. but, let me know if you're interested and i'm sure we can get something worked out to get the rod to you.

I agree that the Offshore Angler™ Offshore Extreme™ Cobia Spinning Rod is too stiff for King Mackerel fishing. However, if you use heavy baits all the time then it's no big deal. It's a Cobia rod but it can also double as a big bait King rod. Big baits as in Hardtails bigger than your hand, etc. Cigar minnows and LY's - this is not the rod for you. The Penn Spinfisher Surf Rod SBG9809 is perfect for smaller size baits and can definitely take the abuse from every day fishing. What ever you decide just remember that every fishing season starts at Dick's.

PM'd--

I may check with Obie too just to see. Thanks for all the help guys. If I can keep it under 125 or so I WOULD LOVE A CUSTOM ROD!

topher, talk with obie and see if he can get just what you want at or around that $125 mark. if it doesn't work out or you need a little more time to save up, just let me know when you want to go get that rod. it's at my dad's house in navarre. you're welcome to use it as long as you need. you can use it til obie builds you a custom rod to your specs. or you can just use it til i come back to florida (may be a year, may be 5 years) and take it from you! so, like i said, this offer will make you happy. the rod is free to "borrow" but treat it like your own. i'll get it back from you one day down the road if i need to.

if you do decide that you want the rod... there are a few conditions. contribute to this forum and ask as many questions as can pop into your head. be "teachable" and learn as much as you can from this forum and some of the friendly guys you'll find out on the pier. pier #r is one of our moderators here and from what i understand, he is super helpful... so get with him and learn what you can. let's see... you HAVE to use 40lb sevenstrand. at least until you personally decide that you don't like it. you can never king fish with braid... i'm sure there are some more rules that i can come up with. but they'll all be easy. oh, one more stipulation. my dad likes scotch or miller light. you choose which one he gets when you pick up the rod.
is that a good enough offer?

nb&twil you are one heck of a guy! That is an extremely generous offer and I think I will take you up on it, to "borrow." I don't have a whole lot of money at the moment but I am going to talk to obie about building a custom rod too and holding on to yours til you might want it again one day. Any day any time. It honestly really bothers me not to pay you for it but I'm going to be humble and pass it on following all the stipulations you said and to others as I can. Talk to your father and be sure its alright and let me know whens good for you or him I should say :) And I will pay you back for it some day, one way or another. I'll PM you my phone number and you can give me a call. Thank you, I just want say because just the offer is extremely giving and don't feel bad if you have second thoughts. I will treat it better than if it was my own, while always keeping it in mind. I think it would be a great reminder every time I step out to the planks. Thank you again.

it's my pleasure to help you out. i think you'll be satisfied with the rod. i've built the same rod, and a few similar to it that i have fallen in love with. so like i said, use it, fish it often. put some stories with the rod. i am well aware of the risk i'm taking. rods sometimes break, and i'll say it right here on a public forum, if something happens and that rod breaks while fighting a fish, or within normal operating conditions, no biggie! but shoot, it's a gator, i HIGHLY doubt you'll hurt it. once again, treat it like it's yours, fish it hard, and hopefully you'll like it as much as i have liked that blank.

Yes Wil is a fine young man, I say that never having the pleasure of meeting him beyond the confines of this forum.  I have observed his posts here and just have to say I like the way he's put together.  Words such as knowledgeable, courteous, caring and integrity are just a few that I perceive him possessing in spades.

Wil, I would imagine that you have several people that would be willing to help you in any way at the drop of a hat.  You can consider me one of them from this point forward.  I hope that we can meet sometime in the future.

Yep, it sounds like I'm going to owe the lot of you some beers and mackeral on the grill. Don't worry I'll be sure to get lots of pics of the many fish I pull up thanks to all of you. And Wil you know you'll always be welcome over for some beers and dinner.
