Last 14  plus sails I offered Jeb while fishing Panama were answered by "You take it" as he lay up in the berth of 'Ms. Tropic Star' snoozing all day.  Now a small one shows up on the pier and he's ready to move South. Go figure.  I do agree that it's the premier species to catch on most any pier; although I'd take a thresher over one. Regards to all,
Doc

I would gladly take one on the pier, but whether I would kill it is another story. I have enough bills in my collection and maybe it will come back to the pier and give someone another chance one day.

Unfortunately sails wear themselves out quickly due to the size of their dorsal. They will come in dark brown due to diminished oxygen. That makes them slow to recover and a prime target for sharks.  Ideally one would want some pictures and a release. At GSP one, unfortunately, would be toothy critter food upon any type of release. I think the state minimum is 99 inches; but I imagine that when one is caught (and one will be) that no matter what size it's coming up to the planks.  They make good sashimi also. We released one off of a longline that had circle hooks baited with pieces of shark skin with some meat. That one survived. We confiscated the longline and turned in the boat that set it out.

Tom Pace here, typing this up for John..

"If you hook a sailfish and you want to save it's life, pop it off immediately, otherwise, fighting the fish for a long time on light tackle, and then releasing it right next to the pier will almost certainly kill the fish, and if that doesnt do it, the sharks will. If I ever get to be in that elite club that gets to catch a sail off of a pier, that will probably never happen, I will most certainly kill the fish. And if you dont agree with me and knock my sail off w/a gaff, ima gonna bust your ass"

I'm with Dredg. Fish would have to give his life for the betterment of the pier. For sure to make the front page.

Hey I have no problem sticking it. But like I said I hate to see a fish go to waste. If it is not going to be wasted, no problems here.

It was something to behold
Pete yelled out "SAILFISH" when he saw the bill raise up on one of the free float baits about 70 yards west of the end.
I was wrapping a leader and stood up and could see a big hole in the water.
Then this one dude (sorry I didn't catch the lucky guys name ;-)
stepped back from the rail and it was FISH ON!
The sail tailwalked about 15 yards toward the pier and everybody was gawking like

I ran over to the SW rail and opened my digicam.
Just missed the next (2nd jump), but you can see the red float that was tangled up in the hooked up line...

And it was too far out so I missed the last jump (about 150 yards out to the SW).

But I got lucky with the third jump
The full image...

So I was able to crop from the original image...

and zoom in 2X (200%) enlargement...

even 300% enlargement...
The angler's float is the yellow one.

It had a good girth!
I agree with the 40#-60# guestimate.
This was the first sailfish I've ever seen hooked
And I thank the good Lord for letting me be there to see it
